Default Mammary Gland Cancer

I just got word that Shoshona and Eli's biological Mother has been diagnosed with Mammary Glad cancer thats spread to a lymph node...its inoperative. My friend said she's getting around and you would never know it just looking at her. Tomarrow she starts some kind of pills. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it the kind that they go downhill fast? I in tears over this-she is one of the most remarkable dogs I've ever known. I'll try to get her pic posted.

There are a lot of different varieties of mammary cancer so the prognosis varies. In many cases removing both mammary chains and spaying the dog can help. It's not curative but it can slow the progression of the disease and the removal of the hormones slows the cancer cell growth. there are some kinds that are responsive to chemo but again, I think that varies.

I would recommend a trip to a veterinary oncologist for a consultation about options. Most general practice vets are not going to have the most up to date information or diagnostic ability.

Thank you both so much. I will check with Chris. So far I understand she is doing well and still enjoying swimming and runs through the fields.

Rosa you tell your friend that she has a prety gal there.

There are different things that can be done, a cancer diet is one, depending on age if they opt to not due surgery there some Vet's using Predinsone or Prednisolone to slow the growth.

Many thanks Val. I'll write that one down and mention it to Anne when we talk. I love this girl much like I love my own three and I just want to make sure she is offered every advantage that is available.
I didn't quite understand why they said they couldn't operate and that if they did it would just spread??? I don't understand why they can't just take the cancer out along with the affected lymth node??? They are saying it hasn't spread past that point and its not in her blood, then why can't they take it out????

Thanks for putting up with what might seem like stupid questions right now, I"ll be on the Internet a lot this weekend. I'll also try to get one of my Dr's I work with to explain some of this to me tomarrow. I was just too upset today. I'll also read the Cancer info above...I kind of looked over it but didn't think it had a lot on this type of Cancer.

And thank you, she is beautiful isn't she?? I was there with her when she had her last litter of pups two years ago (she retired after that) and she actually let me be there with her. From what I understand she was the type that wouldn't let anyone near her except Anne in moments like that. Anne was careful to read her and could tell that my presence wasn't upsetting her so I got to stay. During each of my visits I'd spend hours and days with her...I love her so much. Shoshi and Eli both have her eyes.
