Rabies Vaccination Laws Oklahoma?????? Oh Boy!
I don't get it. What do they not understand? I hate to stereotype but I have run into a brick wall concerning rabies in Oklahoma. I think they simply cannot read here or are so set in thier ways they refuse to accept.
All of my dogs are on a 3 year vaccine. They were vaccinated in Oregon and are current. I have had numerous conversations, discussions and on saturday - close to a barroom brawl with a grommer over rabies vaccination and what is considered "current".
I am looking for a groomer for the dogs while I am deployed in Iraq. Joe does not need the hassle of bathing them. So I go into a grooming salon and right on the wall they state they require current vaccines and list rabies as having to be done each year. So I asked what the law said (I already know what it says) and the groomer informs me the city requires rabies annually. I told her no the city did not, the city ordinance specifies that vaccine is considered current if it is done by a licensed vet, and it is within the time frame as required by the vet, the vaccine manufacturer and the guidelines established by the state. Go to state guidelines - which say the vaccine's limit of effectiveness is determend by the USDA and manufacturer and specifies the 3 year vaccine is accepoted in Oklahoma.
End of story? No of course not. I got the shouted lecture about her being a dog professional for 14 years and she knew what she was talking about and BESIDES "my dog was killed by a rabid skunk!" I am sorry her dog was killed but it probably was not vaccinated. But that does not mean she can require vaccines above what the law requires. But then again this is Oklahoma AKA land of the well never mind - it is insulting. And there are some very intelligent people here.
What is even funnier is the vets don't even know what is says and they administer the shot and give it an expiration date of one year. The city is clueless too. I expect this is just entrenched.
Come shot time I do not plan on giving Max any and there will be a discussion about vaccination protocols for the other 2. I overheard the vet explaining why he does not beleive in longer vaccine protaocals to a client with a new puppy last week while I was in picking up Previcox for Max. I so wanted to jump and down but minded my own business.
