HELP! Dog SUDDENLY stops eating/drinking!

I will call the vet first thing in the morning and take him in, but I'm worried sick. Aik is age 11 but fit and healthy, had a recent checkup and bloodworkup and everything is well and normal except for some advancing arthritis. He was put on rimadyl a month ago.

He also has badly worn teeth--exposed roots--from rock eating, but has ALWAYS eaten and drank normally.

Today and tonight, all was fine, ate dinner and drank. Some friends visited with small children and he played and threw his toy.

Around bedtime, I went to give him some treats and he took them but let them fall out of his mouth--his favorite treats! he went to drink water a few times but after a lick or two he stopped and recoiled.

He continued to seem thirsty and want to drink, but stopped after a lick or two. I fed him some of his favorite yogurt on my fingertips but he stopped after one or two licks.

I went to bed but woke up to check on him, his nose is dry and he went to drink but stopped.

I have felt all around his teeth and gums for discomfort, he lets me poke and prod all around his teeth. His tongue looks fine, but I don't know what to look for.

I will call the vet first thing and ask to take him in, but in the meantime, I'm sick with worry---and he is looking sad and refused to go out.

Any ideas? I CAN'T lose him now--he is my rock after losing Lucy and he's the pup's best buddy--and mine!

I wouldn't wait until morning. I would have been to the vet hours ago. He could have anything wrong w/him and it may be nothing life threatening but I'm one that prefers the better safe than sorry route.

Re: HELP! Dog SUDDENLY stops eating/drinking!

I'm so sorry Aik's not feeling well, I hope he's doing better soon. It sounds like this came on suddenly.

I'm a worrywart when it comes to sudden illnesses (especially with the old guys). Could the kids have given him something he shouldn't have eaten? Does he have a fever? Vomiting? Diarrhea? Any unusual symptoms that might give you a clue if it's an emergency or it it can wait a few hours?

One thing I'd do is check his gums to see if they're pink or white. If they're white I'd call the ER.

If I'm unsure if I'm dealing with an emergency or not, I always go with the theory WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT even if it means a trip to the ER.

I don't know if you're on the lower Cape or upper Cape but there are 2 emergency vets to choose from. The emergency clinic in West Bridgewater, and the new emergency center in Dennis. Roberts in Hanover may be an option too.

I also wouldn't wait till later, I'd get him in somewhere now.

Re: HELP! Dog SUDDENLY stops eating/drinking!

I am so sorry.
My 12.5 yo stopped eating and drinking and two days later I had to put him to sleep. His liver values were off the chart. Six months earlier his checkup was perfect and he was put on Deramaxx for arthritis. I suspect liver damage from the deramaxx, but it could have been cancer too.
I think you are right to take him to the vet.

Re: HELP! Dog SUDDENLY stops eating/drinking!

Back from vet--he has facial palsy?!? mild symptoms on one side of his face, of unknown origin. Bloodwork will be back in a day or so to check for thyroid problem, but basically it's a "wait and see" situation. It can resolve as spontaneiously as it came on.

In the meantime, I feed and water him with a turkey baster. I am now wearing more dogfood than I got in to him. I have to practice my technique.

OH no Jennifer! He looked so good last night, happy, healthy and NOT letting little Zuzu near his favorite tugs. So they think it could just clear up? Pinched nerve, muscle spasm I have no idea what would cause this?

It's kind of like Bell's Palsy in people, though I had no idea dogs get it!
