Default Red skin between toes...

I think usually red skin between the toes is a sign of allergy? My Cody has always had red skin between his toes in the back legs, NOT front. He also has a tendency to chew on his back paws on the top, not his toes, not the webbing -red areas- between his toes, but the top of his back paw. Typically it is the same exact spot that he develops this hot spot.
He has been to the vet several times for the hot spots and at some point the vet said he has fungus or something between his toes. Has anyone heard of this or has your dog had this? I am just wondering if the redness (fungus?) between his back toes causes the hot spots? They are almost purplish-red, very very weird coloring.
Also wanted to add that I have changed Cody's food a few times and it seems this continues to happen with any food he is on... grainfree or with grains, does not matter

it could be an environmental allergy and not food related. Or it might not be grains, but same protein when you changed food?

Thanks Angela... how would I determine what environmental allergy he may have? I know they have allergy tests for dogs? Do those work pretty well to determine what is going on?

When you changed foods, did you always say get the ones with chicken in it? It can also be the same protein in each food you tried. Look to see if anything in common in all the foods you tried for him.

I have always fed him food with chicken in it.. I have often wondered if I should try something different, and I think the grain-free food that I fed him was salmon and something... I was hoping it would help him, but at the end it did not. AT some point I thought it was just him being neurotic and chewing on himself but the redness between his paws has always been there..
