We just got over hotspots in our house and we went to the vet. Sig got antibiotics, an oral steroid, and topical steroid. I have heard that bag balm works though. My fear is hot spots can spread and rapidly if not treated correctly! Best of luck to you!!

I've used 50/50 Apple Cider Vinigar (Bragg's Organic) and water
You'll find a lot of home remedies that work for different folks. Do you know what caused the hotspot? Dante has flea allergies

Sig got stung by something. My vet was on vacation when this happened and the on call vet told me that the bacteria in the hotspots could spread! I have had dogs for 5 years and never had a hot spot so I just went with it I figured the vet knew what he was talking about! Good to know though thanks!!!

I used the very diluted listerine(brown bottle) and then gold bond powder for Clover's they cleared up quickly. Trimmed her fur around it, too. She was a golden/border- those breeds tend to get them often. She never had any after I put her on a raw diet.

I am on a few Golden Retriever forums and Goldens get a lot of hot spots. The thing I've heard a lot of Golden owners swear by is Gold Bond medicated powder. Usually they shave the area first if possible.
I was lucky, my Golden never had a single hot spot in the 11 years I owned her (I attribute it to the fact that she did not have a lot of undercoat like many Goldens have.) |
