Does my dog need vaccine for leptospirosis?

Hi,
I just went to the vet for a regular checkup and she asked me, if I want a leptospirosis vaccine for Buddy. Buddy is 1 year 9 months.
She was trying to tell me, that it is a good prevention and so, but when I got home and checked what it is, it said that it only can prevent against 2 strains and there are about 4 others it doesn't prevent.
Do your dogs get this vaccine too? I just don't want to over vaccinate. Also, what about lyme vaccine?

DO NOT get the lyme vaccine, as it can cause the same symptoms of lyme as the disease can, but there is no treatment. My dog has dealt with disease induced by this vaccine for over a decade (diagnosed through Cornell).

You are in the Bay Area, and you do have a risk of tick diseases, but you also risk the other diseases, not just lyme, so do practice good tick measures.

I wouldn't get the lepto vaccine. Some vaccines do cover more strains, so it depends on the one that your vet carries. But also, she should know what strains have been found in your area. If she doesn't know, then it sounds like lepto isn't a problem where you are.

it's up to you; but, even though the lepto vacc is only good for some of the strains and is only good for about 9mos, i get it a couple of times in the hope that the dogs will develop some immunity; in theory, if vaccinated and later exposed, the WBCs should recognize the virus as foreign and begin to attack it w/help from the memory cells

Lepto is bacterial, they don't develop immunity in the sense that you are thinking.

I get the lepto, I knew someone that had a dog that got VERY sick from lepto. I guess he drank out of a puddle outside and it is from wild animal urine. I never used to get it but I do now after that. It is hard to stop them from putting their noses in everything when they are outside and I have a lot of wildlife up here.

We don't do Lepto or Lyme for our dogs, as we feel that the issues and risks with the vaccines outweigh the benefits.

My vet doesn't recommend Lepto unless I'm taking one of the Hooligans to an area that has a problem.

Thanks to everybody for their input. I will think it over next time I go to vet.

I think, I'm kinda impressed that your vet asked you whether you want the vaccines, rather than told you that you need to give them, and then was okay leaving the decision with you. If that's the way it went, that's positive sign regarding your vet!
