Default thyroid test questions & average cost

Hi,

I'm considering getting a thyroid test done on one of my dogs. I hear that something "malfunctioning" in the thyroid can cause issues like aggression and I would imagine some other stuff.

I realize I have to call my own vet for their pricing, but while I'm here and thinking about it, thought I'd ask what have you'all paid for a thyroid test?

What kinds of things can a thyroid test check for? Anyone know on average if a thyroid malfunction is a common uncommon occurrence?

How is the test administered, blood draw or ??? How long on average does it take to get the results? Are the results something a vet can generally get right in their office or does the blood or whatever usually have to be sent to a lab?

Anything at all you can tell me about a thyroid test would be greatly appreciated.

You can have your vet draw and send it to his lab, or you can have them draw it, and you can send it to Dodd's lab -- the latter is a pain, but usually cheaper.

However you do it, make sure that you run a panel that includes the free T4, free T3, and TgAA. To get those three things, you'll also get a bunch of other stuff on the panel, including the other antibody tests for T4 and T3 (T4AA and T3AA).

There are a couple of links here:

This is Jean dodd in California that does the test the best...

Your vet draws the blood and sends it to her.

she charges 65 and then you vet will charge 15 and the 2 day mail
the forms are on her site she is wonderful she has helped with Jack so much even reccommending a medication that has helped with the itching and a food that will also help him. I feel like she is a guardian angel for pets....

Jack's was adequate but they reccommended retest in a year she is also good with allergies I wish she was my VET lol

Thank you Kathy. From reading the info on her site, it does seem like if you're going to have this test done, this would be the best place to send the blood to. No sense spending the money on a test if the lab it goes to isn't going to be as thorough or knowledgeable as these folks. Thanks much!
