Default EPI RESEARCH STUDY-GSD blood needed

Does your GSD have EPI? Want to help find out what causes it?

Phase I of the EPI research is completed at TX A&M.
It is concluded that EPI is no longer considered to be caused by an autosomal recessive gene as previously thought.

Phase II of the research is getting started in an effort to identify the multiple genetic markers. At this time the research team is in need of blood samples from about 55 more EPI GSD's. They will send you the test results so if you always wanted your dog retested this might be your answer.

There is no charge for the testing. You will need to cover what your vet charges but many will cover the blood draw knowing it is for research or charge a nominal fee -about $20. TX A&M will pay for the shipping if they have funds.

Hi everyone, I just heard from Dr. Clark from Texas A&M (TAMU) in answer
to your questions about the EPI Research Study and the blood samples that
are needed to conduct this study:

1. we ill bekeeping in touch with the researches to find out how many more samples are needed for the research.

2. There is no specific time-frame, however, with that being
said, the quicker we get samples in the sooner we get the
data and hopefully some answers.

[my personal take on this is to not drag it out..... maybe we,
as a group, we can set a 55 blood count goal and shoot for end of Feb???]

3. No pedigrees needed. Even rescues that unquestionably look like
purebred GSDs will be accepted.

4. Non-EPI need to be from senior dogs. 9 or 10 years +

Thanks Everyone!

This is a great opportunity for free testing. This is how I was able to test Max the second time, for Phase I of the study.

Our Jazzi participated in the research first time around. I'm so sad we lost her since then and can't participate once again. My vet did the blood draw for free so there was no cost to us.
Best wishes to all of you with EPI dogs.

It's wonderful that they're doing this research!

I'm assuming that they would need to be fasted for these blood samples as well... just as with the regular TLI test??

May be of interest: Viokase powder has been discontinued in Canada. How do I know? My big guy's bottle ran out and the pharmacy said "too bad. No other options." Oh, yeah? Well, God Bless the US of A for selling it on the internet to all of us dog lovers. And at a QUARTER of the price I was paying. I love the snow and -20 degrees is just fine with me, but you got us beat in so many other ways. Anyway, anyone else needing the Viokase generic replacement, I urge you to support my dog's savior at http://www.freewebs.com/enzymediane

Yes, you do have to fast the dog for 12 hours before the test can be performed.

Thank you to all that are sending in their dogs blood samples. I should have a new count soon of how many more are needed.

And yes the Pancreatin works great and is a great alternative for those in Canada that are in need of enzyme powder.
