We think our 10 week old pup is going to be long haired. (Mom was long, dad was short) Right now he is very fuzzy, and getting hot and panting pretty easily. With the heat here in Texas, I'm afraid it could be a long summer for this little guy. We are first time GSD owners, so any suggestions would be great!
Mine is 10 months now but he LOVES his new kuranda cot with mesh fabric (he is on it as I type)
I use kurandas in my kennels for boarders, and when he gets kenneled he would get a kuranda and a primo pad. But at night in our bedroom he was always hot. I knew he liked the kuranda I the kennel so I got him the breathable one.
If your dog is going to spend a lot of time outdoors, make sure they get plenty of time to acclimate to the temperature as it rises as we progress toward summer. They have to get used to the heat just like a person would.
I live in Florida and I have a kiddie pool filled up in the shade outside for the dogs. I have two short haired APBT and then Brinks who has a short but thick textured coat like a GSD and they take a dip whenever they start getting too warm. They have a lot of fun splashing and it's a great way for them to self regulate their temperature.
I have the same issue. We don't have air conditioning and our current puppy is quite fuzzy and pants often, while napping in the house, even on the wood floor. I'm ordering a "Hugs Pet Products Chilly Mat Comfort Cooling Gel Pet Mat". It's pressure activated. From Amazon.
I have some "stuffies" (plush toys) that I soak and freeze for chew treats.
I've also been known to spray their paws with water and turn a fan on them.
