Soon to get GSD puppy! Tips and advice please?
Hey all, my sister will be getting a female german shepherd (3 and a half months) in a few days. We have a 3 year old maltese as well. The maltese (f) is hyper all the time and can get feisty if provoked.
1) Would like any advice which would help the two get along and how to introduce them to each other.
2) Any tips for the first week or month, or anything that we need to pay extra attention to? She will get her daily exercise, looked after thoroughly, and other things a puppy needs although how much exercise would be overdoing it for a GSD puppy?
I have read the FAQs but still would like to have any advice from first hand owners and take care of anything i have may missed out to make sure the puppy is fine, as i know GSDs aren't like most dogs :)
Thanks a lot in advance! :)
Make sure you understand crate training and have room beside your bed for the crate.
Mentally wrap your mind around --> http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...s-puppies.html
Also, start looking for a good puppy class so you can join ASAP and start up the training/socialization that helps with.
I'm in my first week of having my pup (he'll be 9 weeks tomorrow) so I don't have the experience others might have. What I can say is do a lot of research on this site about crate training, potty training, etc. This site has GREAT information! I did a ton of research before getting Rambo. The first few days are tough. Only because my husband and I have gotten no sleep. He whines for about 5 minutes and goes to sleep in his crate but every so often he's up needing to go potty.
I always keep an eye on him because when he starts sniffing around the floor I know he has to go outside, so I take him to the door and I say "let's go potty!" and when we get outside i say "go potty" and when he pees outside I treat him like a king! Treats, attention, play, etc. So far he's getting the hang of it.
The breeder I got him from was already crate training him so it might be different for you. He's never had an accident in his crate. :D
As far as the exercise goes, I take him for a short walk (not run!) at night before bed just so he gets tired. I really tire him out the hour before he goes to sleep. That means playing fetch, running around the house with him, and more. It helps him sleep longer.
To be honest though if you get a good schedule going you should be fine! Rambo gets up in the AM, plays and eats and then he sleeps for about 2 hours. And that goes on throughout the day.
PLENTY of toys! Nyla bones, ropes, squeaky toys, and balls. Tennis balls that is :)
I would suggest no rawhide bones or pig ears. I've read they can be extremely harmful.
Hope I gave some good advice! I'm new to all of this too :) I've had puppies before but never actually on my own. They were always my parent's puppies.
Good luck and congrats on your new addition! You'll have fun with her :D
Also! Post pictures when you get her! :p
