First Outdoor Adventure

Now that Fawn is fully vaccinated, we're ready for some hiking! I don't do anything heavy in the deep wilderness but I do enjoy casual nature walking and hiking as well as exploring along lakes and beaches.

My question is how to handle other off-leash dogs? I keep Fawn close and away from strange dogs and people. I plan to take her to areas with leash restrictions to cut down on any incidents but people tend to do what they want around here.

My beagle mix is aloof to others dogs, ignores and follows her nose anyway, so this was never an issue but now that Fawn is 40lbs, I can't just hike her under my arm like I have in the past.

Advise?

Our 5.5 month old hangs very close when off leash, especially in an unfamiliar area. I'd try to go to a place, or a time when few people will be around. It helps to be able to see a ways, time to leash up the dog.

Carry a few treats with you. I also don't do a lot of calling, unless I mean it. I like to use 'body language' to influence and control the dog. That could be you stopping, facing a different direction, or walking the other way. I also hide behind a bush at times to develop the desire for the dog to look back and see what's in store next. That's not a big issue now since Mya hangs so close.

I just call in my dogs and have them sit/stay with me off the trail while the other dogs/people pass.

I don't actually mind if the other dog is friendly and they meet/greet AFTER I confirm with owner and other pups body language. But if I am in ANY doubt. I keep my pups off the trail and my human body between the other dog(s) handlers as they pass.

This is great advice! I think we'll try a relaxed river walk to start out. My friend's dog was recently skunked but perhaps that's what she gets for having the dog off-leash in a leash restriction area. :D
