What's in a name?

I'm about to get my first purebred AKC GSD, and honestly I'm pretty confused about naming. I know that the dog will need a formal name, but I'm not sure what exactly that means. Is there a sort of naming convention that I need to follow? Does it get a family name? Are there certain "rules" I need to follow when naming him? What is the importance of the name?

I love doing call names and registered names. :)

Say the kennel name where you got your puppy is "Aquatic."

You want to call your dog "Rip" or "Splash" though.

You could could register your dog as "Aquatic's Roaring Riptide" on paper but everyday you just call him Rip or Splash.

I personally couldn't care less about including the kennel's name. I ended up choosing Apsel, because the sire's name was Aksel, which meant father of peace, and Apsel means my father is peace. At least that's what I've read in a few places. The rest of Apsel's name just translates to 'the black bear'. He looked just like a bear cub as a puppy @ 8wks, and even tried climbing up my legs like a cub would a tree.

In my case his name still maintained the breeder's 'Peacekeeper(personal protection dogs from czech/east german lines)' theme but it really just happened to be a name I liked.

Thank you guys!! I need some input, I was hoping to get a male but turns out the entire litter was female - so now I'm getting a female! I had a male name picked out, but now I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure I know what I am talking about because all the registered name/kennel names and call names etc are of little concern to me...however...my experience suggests: The breeder at times will want the registered name to begin with a specific letter correlating to which litter succession the pup comes from...not clear on this...but if it is the A litter then the registered name will start with an A.. B litter starting with a B and so on.

In our current pup's situation she was part of the Y litter hence her registered name is Yakaia Vom Herzbach...we chose the name Yakaia because we had decided her call name would be Kaia....so I think this is how it works at times. I agree with a previous poster where they stated they really couldn't care less about any naming protocol....but the registered name is a name which does have to follow certain guidelines I believe. I am sure there are some breeders and others in here which would know much more about this than me....I'm just a happy guy with an awesome dog which tolerates me.

The breeder might require you to use their kennel name as part of your dog's registered name. As for the rest, you will need to ask if they are naming litters alphabetically, or have a theme for the names. Other than that, you just need to follow the AKC guidelines. Naming of Dogs
