Default Getting My Puppy Next Week

Finally, after over a year of waiting, I will be getting the little guy next week. I did my research and found the best breeder I could and the once a year litter is almost ready to go to their new homes.

I'll post pics as soon as I get him.

First off, I wanted to thank you guys on this site. I have read an insane amount of info on everything I could and am currently reading "How To Be Your Dogs Best Friend" by the Monks of New Skete.

I am still undecided if I will do clicker training or not.
-Is it that much better?
Also, haven't made up my mind about the Barf diet.
-A good quality dog food would be just as good, right?

I'd like to feed raw I think but don't know how feasible it is for me being in an apartment with a small freezer and no where to put a new big deep freezer.

If you guys have any other major tips or advice, feel free to send it my way.

Thanks and I'll keep this thread updated.

I don't feed raw but do invest in quality kibble.

You can use a clicker or a verbal marker.

here's a freebee you might want to view.

BARF vs kibble... A lot of people differ in opinion. I feed Prey Model Raw, I find the bioavailability to be much higher with raw vs kibble, even a high quality kibble. BUT, kibble is convenient. I manage to fit 2 months worth of raw for three animals into my tiny freezer... But then, I don't have anything of my own in there.

The great thing about clicker training, is that it teaches YOU how to train a dog! I loved how it introduced me to the concept of setting up your dog to succeed and rewarding the success. It showed me how dogs learn, and how we can set up an early foundation where in the dogs mind, learning stuff is the funnest game ever!

It taught me how to break down complex behaviours into small parts and train them one at the time to get the end result you want, and it taught me the importance of timing when rewarding the right behavior.

I actually haven't continued with clicker training since that very first class (just went with different types of classes and clubs), but it was a great foundation for me to learn training basics.

Thanks. I'll start off with it most likely.

Still trying to decide on a name.

He is a WGSD so I was thinking
Rayo-Beam or ray in Spanish
Cane-short for sugar cane. we're from Louisiana
Vape(s)-the contrails that come off of a jet. In the Air Force
Ares-God of war and son of Zeus. Likes dogs.
Cronus-God of the sky; Ruler of the Titans

Any other suggestions?

For a name I'd look to one short & sweet, easy to say and the dog to hear. I often use a whistle more for calling though.

Yep.

Names are now down to Rayo, Rex (the all white main mardi gras parade) or Ruffio

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

As another Louisianian, have you thought of

rougarou (werewolf
or
Roux?

Rex is good.

Is this a boy from the R litter?

I like it but it's a little long.

Not naming him roux because he's white and my family's golden is named roux.

And no to the R litter question. Just coincidental. Haha
