Default Rubber mats for pen

I was walking threw walmart the other day and they have the rubber mats to place under work out equipment.

I was wondering if I could use them in the dog pen to keep it both softer then the hardwood and keep it from being all scratched up.

You may get a better deal at a feed store buying horse stall mats. You can usually buy a 4'x6' mat for $40 or so.
