New puppy bathing??

So would you recommend giving your new pup a bath when they arrive home?

Our last pup was a white shepherd and looked a little dirty from the kennel and playing with the littermates. We bathed her immediately when we got her home as we had other dogs in the house as well.

Do you typically give your new pups a bath when you first get them home? Pros, cons, etc?

Last pup sure slept good after the trip then bath and the days excitement. She didn't act very traumatized by the experience.

I rarely bath my dogs. The current puppy got a bath after her second car sickness adventure. Pukey Little Puppy! smelled much better after her bath. It was in the bathroom sink. She won't fit there any more.

But in general, no I wouldn't bath the puppy as a matter of routine.

I don't know that I would do it day one, or even in the first week, unless the puppy was downright unhygienic. I like that first week to be sweet and easy because they have gone through enough change just going to a new home.

Huxley was quite clean when we picked him up, thankfully, but I still made a bath part of his growing up experience. I figured if he learned to love it as a puppy it would make life easier when he attained his adult size! Think about wrestling a never been bathed adult dog who has been skunked

I only bathe Scout if he has rolled around and gotten dirty. I occasionally bathe him just to keep him clean. At the beginning he would run and run when I turned on the hose but now he learned I will not hurt him and it is something we have to do. If your dog is not dirty I would reccomend once a month. If he runs like Scout did I got a long leash and tied him up to the tetherball pole. You can tie them up to a fence pole, metal pole, etc with a long leash so he can walk around but not run away.
