potty problems...

Hey all, I have a 10 week GSD pup, shes normally very good at going to the door whenever she needs to go potty, I use a crate at night and during the day when I need to go to the store. I'm never gone for more than an hour and I always take her out and make sure she goes before coming back in. Today while i was at the store she nearly flooded her crate. There have been several times where she has gone in the house and we are putting new carpet in soon (not because of her but because its an old house and its overdue for a new one) and i really don't want to have to leave her outside since its been snowing and 20 below for the last 3 weeks. Are there any methods I could use to prevent her from going in the house?

It just takes time. 10 weeks is pretty young still. I would wait on the carpet until she is potty trained. Or get a spotbot and expect accidents.

I'm with trcy.... you need to wait to get that new carpeting. It is completely NOT FAIR to get new carpeting and it's not fair to the puppy. You decided to get the puppy at this time, so YOU need to decide to put off on the carpeting until this normal housebreaking issue is worked thru.

I know I would be furious and lose my mind if I just bought new carpeting and the puppy pee'd pooped on it again!!! But would be much more comfortable with the same on the old carpeting. It's the SAME BEHAVIOR from the puppy and not their fault that I'm so much madder in one situation then the other.

If you have to get the carpeting.............. then I'd be off to the Home Depot/Loews and purchase a waterproof tarp the same size as the room the pup will be in to completely cover the floor. That way it's an easy cleanup.

I'd also go back and read the hints/tips on crate training --> What is crate training (why put my puppy in a cage?) alot of time we skip steps or think our pup is so smart we don't need to do THAT... and it sets our pup up for failure and sets us up for frustration and alot of cleaning up.

Wait on the carpet. Can't leave a puppy outside?? We have cement flooring in tv room that I stained after lifting carpet from my other dogs as puppies. It is what it is. Tear up the carpet stain the cement throw a remnant piece of carpet from Home Depot down and leave it at that til the puppy stages are over
