Default Sable pup?

So, Dis-Dis is finally old enough that I can get another puppy, and not worry about them bonding to the point of me being the lesser party in the whole equation. I found an Amish couple who has a few girls left(Dis-Dis isn't so fond of males, though I know it would be a better choice to get a male) but they're only sables. And I adore sables, but I want a sable that ends up being darker, than lighter. Of course, I am taking the temperament/etc into consideration.

I've looked around here, and people say to see pictures of them right after birth, because that will be more of their adult coat colors. Sadly, the couple doesn't have any pictures of the three girls I get to choose from, so I can't take that into consideration. I will be picking her up around Christmas time, and she'll be about 10 weeks and 4 days. I'm going this Saturday to get the first feel for the puppies, and hopefully claim one as mine.

Barring any temperament issues, should I look for a puppy that is darker right now? Or lighter?

Thanks for the help guys.

Don't go with an Amish breeder, regardless. Run fast from that.

When you find a reputable breeder who is producing what you're looking for temperament wise, look for a darker pup- they tend to be darker as adults.

I'm not sure it's a wise decision purchasing from amish breeders? but that's up to you.

I honestly have never heard the reasoning that the color right after birth is more of their adult color especially with sables.

Sables are ever changing, even mine at 5 years of age has darkened up more than she was just last year

You might get a better idea of what it would end up by seeing both parents.

I guess my question to you is, if you pick one, and end up with a light sable is that going to make a difference?

We all have our color preferences, but I would be more concerned that the parents of these puppies are at the very least, hip/elbow certified??

Quick question, why not an Amish breeder? I was told that they produce pretty good pups, if you can find one that is reputable in their area/etc type...thing? xD

Both mommy and daddy are retired police dogs, and AKC registered. Mommy was on the Chicago force, and daddy was on a smaller police force, though I can't remember where. I don't have the registered names for both of them yet, which I plan to get as soon as I head out there. And they said that they have the papers for the certification of hips and elbows. It's the only reason I've even considered them, and the fact that they won't release them until 10 weeks of age.

And nope! I'd love her the same, it's just a general preference on my part, but something that is totally bypassed by personality, etc.

Mommy wasn't on any police force if not spayed. I am not sure if males are usually neutered as police dogs but I am guess they would be Soooo I doubt daddy was a police dog.

Amish breeders do not prove their dogs are breed worthy so its not usually a good place to start.

If I had a penny for each a "breeder" said their dog was sired by a police dog...

Police K9's are owned by municipalities, meaning during their working career the chance that they will be bred is pretty much zero. Once they're retired, females are too old (and most are spayed), and it's pretty rare that a male would be used either. It's a selling point they can make up because it's just about impossible to actually verify.

I hate stereotyping, but here I go. The Amish have a history and reputation for breeding as if the dogs were livestock. It is a way of making money. They don't work or certify the dogs themselves and most would equate them to BYB/puppy mill status. They view the dogs as income. So often times corners are cut, dogs are not valued family members. They are an investment.

All that said, you can probably find a lovely dog. It is up to you to decide if this particular family is living up to your expectations in a breeder.

My personal opinion is this, if you are going to spend the money on a dog, get what you want, all of it. There are plenty if breeders that breed for EVERY quality you want, including color. I personally feel that if you really want a dark sable dog, find breeders that have them, look at what they produce and find a good match. We hear lots if people say " color is the last consideration, temperament is more important" and I do agree. But I also know for fact that you CAN have both. So why settle. If you want a bi-color, find breeders that have bi-color dogs and also produce the temperament and drive you want. Trust me they are out there. You can get EVERYTHING you want.

My new pup, I wanted a black sable with solid temperament, stable nerves, balanced drive and an open personality. So that's what I looked for, and what I found. There are enough breeders doing it right that can give you everything you want. So don't settle because it's convenient.

Most police dogs are intact.
