If you're very serious about a PPD, I would first find a reputable trainer (there are a lot of really sketchy phonies out there) and then ask who they would recommend and start your research from there. That's your best chance of finding a dog with the temperament to be capable of being a PPD.

Both mommy and daddy are retired police dogs, and AKC registered. Mommy was on the Chicago force, and daddy was on a smaller police force, though I can't remember where.

oh really ? PROOF , ask for it --- many aren't even registered , and AKC ?? , import, brokers being the chief source of police canines .

As far as dogs in service being neutered or not , Saphire speaks to what our experience is . There are some units which neuter both male and female police service dogs - OPP . Use of females rare , not like the European experience. Dogs in service are the property of the municipality not the handler - in fact use of a dog for breeding is a good one way ticket to retirement.
After a dog retires then some are used for breeding.

In this case having the sire and dam , particularly the dam being "retired" police dogs would put the female at an age beyond a good breeding age . Or something went wrong taking her out of service or being rejected from the get go.

Keep looking

Not sure where you're at in IN, but I lived there for almost 10 years and had a lot of contact with the Amish. I would NEVER buy a dog, much less a GSD, from an Amish breeder.

the real crappy breeders tell you what you want to hear. everything is a yes. the real good breeders are the ones that ask YOU questions.

also no matter what breeder it is, ask for proof. i ask for proof of everything. i checked all the serial numbers for akc registration and ofa registration. i had to look at a scanned copy of the pedigree. pedigree database wasnt good enough for me. any little lie and i moved on. the pup is going to be with you for around 12 years. due diligence is important.

Katieliz, I have looked into rescue before, but have been 'denied' because of the area I live in. My area is filled with dog fighting, and just generally avoided by rescues/shelters. Or maybe there is another reason I have not been informed of. I'm not quite sure.

I am skipping out on the Amish breeder, but there is a BYB puppy that looks absolutely heartbreaking. I might get dinged for this, but I always feel awful looking at breeders, when I have the monetary support to help a rescue or a BYB pup with health issues, that would otherwise suffer.

She is another sable, though the owner claims she is a 'diluted black and tan with white genetics'. They say she's AKC registered, but I'm doubtful they even know what that is, really. She's about six weeks now, and the last of her litter to be 'claimed'.

I am feeling rather anxious now though, about leaving the other sables with the Amish, after what I've heard. Augh. I kinda wish I could get them all now, haha.

As hard as it is to leave dogs with those mill breeders, if we want them to stop breeding dogs, we cannot give them money at all. If people stop buying dogs from them, then they won't breed more. It sucks, a lot, because we want to save these dogs, but in the long run many more will be saved. So yes, if you can help a rescue dog from a reputable dog, that's the best way to go. If they are denying you for the area you are in, then finding a good breeder will probably be the way to go.
