Emma and Santa Fe
A week back we spent a week around Santa Fe NM with Emma. She is 9 months old now. We stayed in the Black Canyon campground (excellent place) and made side trips into town and ABQ for a DR visit on Emma's hips. I posted in the medical section on that. The motion sickness pills worked great for the long drive - no truck sickness for once. I did fix her a thickly padded full with bench in the back of my crew cab for her to lay on.
Emma had a great time, especially trying to catch the local chipmunk that knew the end of her leash:D:crazy:. Boy does she like to sniff and follow sent trails.
We took mild 1 to 2 mile hikes in the mornings before the rain started. This tired Emma out enough that she slept the afternoon away in the trailer while we went to the museums, etc. Only couple of times did I need to help her on the trails in some rough rocks and on a steep side slope. She did not complain to any pain, but I could see it in her face when she need help on the trail. On only two days did I need to give her any pain meds.
She did pretty good when folks and other dogs passed, only growing when growled at. However I did make sure to step off the trail to give some space to the others. In the camp ground she did very well of not barking - maybe once - when folks walked by the site. If they came into the site it was a different situation - especially kids running through.
We did take her into town on a tour, trading off with the Boss unit to see the sites. I had her on a short leash with the easy walk harness. She did fantastic, (except for puddle jumping) ignoring and walking by folks without issues - unless they stopped and wanted to pet her. Maybe it was the rain, but she refused to be friendly with just about anyone that approached - even with a treat being offered. Now if I stopped and talked to a store owner, she was fine as long as they did not try and pet. She would lay down and be silent and let them walk up to and over her, as long as they did not pause.
Socializing with other dogs was hit or miss too. Some she wanted to meet, others not. I plan to take her to more of the puppy socialization classes here, and work on her barking at the neighbors as the go by on the road. If it stops raining I will also take her on the river walk and see how she does. Soft muzzle will be with me just in case. Its one she can drink and pant when it is on.
