So in the next month I am preparing my house for the arrival of our new pup, I haven't had a puppy in years, my current dog that will be a big brother was rescued after his "puppy stage" and I have never until recently had to puppy proof! My main concern is the cords that go to my TV and the various electronics that are hooked up to it. Any suggestions on getting the house ready for the pup would be awesome! I want to give him the best life possible and want to get the house ready in advance so we can enjoy our time with the little fellow and not stress about things in the house! Thanks in advance!!

If you can't block his access to the wires, maybe run the wires through PVC pipe? They also make flexible electrical conduit, plastic and steel. Best to just keep him/her supervised while out in the house. if you cant watch him, crate or kennel him.

agree with the above. If you cant bundle the cords nicely and keep them behind furniture the pup wouldnt be able to move (couch, entertainment center, etc) bundle them as best you can and run them through PVC piping. Best part is, you can paint (lead free!!) the pipe whatever color you want. Dont allow your pup to chew on the pipe (i know duh right? lol) but the cords will still be protected. Never underestimate a determined puppy though so supervision is ALWAYS necessary.

You can use apple bitter spray. Keep in mind though that some dogs actually LIKE the taste and it would have to be sprayed daily for effectiveness. We use it in classes to discourage puppy nipping on clothes and hands because it washes off so easily and fades quickly. You can try bitter apple, bitter cherry (walmarts version seen at petsmart a couple times too different brand), or bitter yuck. Be warned though about bitter yuck. THAT is heavy stuff. DONT get it on your hands. There's not enough soap in the world to wash it off your hands quickly and it transfers easily to anything it touches but it's effective. A friend used it for her brothers dog when she watched him and he didnt chew on ANYTHING it was sprayed on but its heavy stuff lol

Wally World and other home improvement stores have a flat cover that is split on the back to hide cords in traffic areas. Cheep and easy to cut to length.
I have an outlet and cords that this did not work for so I made up a mixture of hot pepper solution (used cyan and hot sauce) and painted the cords using a foam brush - worked like a charm. I did check with my vet though. There are other commercial dog off products too. I also paint any table legs or other things I don't want her to chew on. |
