His nail is long and start to have that curve. It is bad enough I get scratch everywhere from his teeth and now from his nails too?! Both my husband and I are scared that we would accidentally hurt him. Do you trim your puppy's nail yourself? I don't think he can go to the groomer either, can he? Given he hasn't have all the shots to go to public places.

We trim our pups nails at home. He's not the biggest fan of it, but my husband says "Who's the human?" so pup doesn't really have a choice in the matter. We try and make it a little better by giving him a bully stick or some little treat after each clip. And I recommend doing it when he's tired...less resistance. Eventually I figure he'll learn to tolerate it as I don't think they ever really *love* getting their nails trimmed.
It's also easier to do it in a brighter light so it's easier to find the quick. If his nails are pretty long, the quick probably is as well. Last edited by jessac; 03-05-2013 at 04:38 PM. |

The hardest part with the pup is telling exactly where to cut. You don't want to cut to much off. It would be best to have someone show you the first time then it is pretty easy.
What you really want to do is get the puppy comfortable with you cutting their nails. This is something you will have to do for a long time so you want them to be as easy as possible. I like to lay the clippers on the ground and let her smell it and check it out and it is nice to have treats on hand until they get comfortable.

I trim Lisl's nails myself. I just did so last night. It's still like trying to hold on to an octopus, but she tolerates it if i can get her to hold still long enough.
I cut just far enough back to take off the 'hook' on the end of the nail. When I start getting scratched really bad and I see nail through the fur on her paws, they're getting too long. I am going to have to find that Dremel tool attachment for my Dremel one of these days. If I know her though, she won't like the noise.

When Hans was little I had them trim his nails at vaccine time, at the vet's.
The reason it is not good to let them get so long is because the quick advances, too, and then you cannot cut them short. |

I used pure compulsion to train my pup to allow me to trim her nails. I put a prong on her and tugged every time she moved. Now she knows that when I trim her nails, she won't die so allows me to do it. We get to party time after which she really looks forward to. Advice from this forum actually c:
Ps I cut her nails almost every other day to shorten her quick...her nails are still long but slowly I am hoping they will go down to her furline
