Hello, Zeus is finally home!!!
We had a 7 hour ride home, he did great. Evening was great and so was the night =) He is on antibiotic for a week because the entire litter had Upset stomach, he went to the bathroom ok last night, but diarrhea this morning. I am sure this morning was related to all the stress from yesterday. (it was clean, just his digested food) We are using same food. I will watch him, but he is already on the medication so I am not too concerned just yet. Another interesting thing, I guess I have so much to learn... I gave him a rawhide pencil stick thing. He was very happy chewing it. I looked down and in 30 min it was mostly soft/chewed up and maybe 25% still hard and wet. I stopped watching him for about 3 minutes to call and set up all his follow up shots. Come back into the room and he is asleep. No stick in sight! I am hoping it is hiding somewhere... but ya I think he swallowed it. Any feedback on this one? |

NO Rawhide!!!! I despise the stuff, especially for a pup. You might want to get an xray as it could potentially cause a blockage. Pups will eat anything so you need to be aware of any small, easily swallowed objects on or around the floor. He's just like a human baby....everything goes in the mouth.

I have always let mine chew rawhides but when they got small enough to be swallowed they were removed. When they swallow a large piece it can cause an obstruction and being a large piece it would also swell.
I hope that your cute little guy will be ok, just try to make sure the rawhide is big enough to not be swallowed.

Awww! Zeus is so cute! Our fella's 5 months and we have him rawhide about 3 weeks ago, anything to stop him chewing the furniture! Big mistake though, gave him a terrible upset tummy and bad diarrhoea even though he only had a small bit. No more rawhide for Max! I did read its not good to give puppy's it anyway because of the obstruction possibility!

Antibiotics can also cause loose stools. They did in Fiona. Fiona chews and destroys every toy. She rips it to tiny pieces and then chews it like gum. Occasionally she actually swallows stuff. Usually when I am trying to get he to give it up.

So far he is playing, ate well no sign of trouble.
I will keep watching him. He has not gone to the bathroom #2 yet. And yep no more rawhides, I can't handle it =) we will do something different! Thank you everyone for helping out. |

Yep no more rawhides, we are learning. I will research more from now on.
He vent to the bathroom twice and its very loose. I have been reading that it can be his shots from Saturday, travel time, new home etc... and to let the pup settle in before dragging him to more exams. If he has parasites, he is already on medication for it. As for food we are on Solid gold (Lamb) and he gets one tablespoon of canned food with each meal. All the same as at the breeder. I wonder if I should try very little bit of pumpkin!? I don't want to make things worse =( other than all this, we are so in love he is such a sweet boy!!! |

handsome bunch of "guys" -- so why is the pup on antibiotics --- if the dog had a reaction to the vaccine , antibiotics are not going to help - that's just a second punch to the immune system.
get a stool sample to your vet , see if there is giardia or coccidiosis or roundworms. When did the diarrhea begin? Before or after the vaccines. If I had an entire litter of pups with "upset stomach" diarrhea I would hold the entire litter back and only let them leave when I was totally satisfied with their state of health. So diarrhea has to be examined . Is it mucousy , stinky, yellow , accompanied by a release of gas . Make sure there is no blood as this would be your early warning sign for parvo . Not to alarm you but on this one you have to be sharp. |
