Made a peanut butter sandwich today and sat down in my chair to eat. Emma was off munching on her bully stick. She gets up and starts sniffing the air around the room (new behavior I have never seen before).
Now I have always had a rule with my dogs, no feeding people food from the table....but ![]() Emma was sniffing around and then centered on where I was - she tried to jump up to see, but was ordered "off" - she complied by sitting back and looking at me, cocked her head, let out a little whimper and gave me the sad puppy eye look, and a little polite bark...that look did me in. So I gave her a bit of crust that had a bit of peanut butter on it (whole multi-grain bread and chunky peanut butter). She was very timid with it a first (not sure what it was), but about 30 seconds later was back at my side sitting and wagging her tail with her tong hanging out and a big smile on her face. So I caved in and gave her a piece with more peanut butter on it, and in the process got a dab on the front of her nose. I was very surprised at how gently she took it from my fingers - I was ready for a chomp. I just about died laughing watching her eat (lick the roof of her mouth) and then try and lick her nose clean....but boy do I now regret doing it - I created a monster ![]() ![]() ![]() She was back instantly, this time barking up a storm and jumping up for more. I tried to tell her no more (she had seen me finish it off) but I really got told off by her ![]() After a minute or so she finally gave up after lots of "no" "off", etc, but she again started sniffing the air. Next thing I hear is her barking in the kitchen - a big ruckus of her running around, knocking over the trash, spilling her food, etc. I get in there and find out I had left the peanut butter jar open on the counter - she could not see it, but knew it was there. She was almost able to jump high enough to see it. Smart Dog .It was really funny watching her expression as I closed it up and put it away, with her wining, prancing around, and me saying "no". I know I was just talking to myself at that stage. She sat by the pantry door for a good 10 minutes wining and an occasional bark, before going back to her bully stick. She had plenty of other food available too. Now I know I have to undue the damage when I eat in my chair and "NOTE TO SELF - don't feed people food, especially from the table". ![]() This will be interesting teaching no, now that I did it. I know the boss unit will let me have it too.Someday I will learn - thankfully she is now asleep under/on my feet. Go ahead and laugh...while I cry ![]() - I love this girl

I give in at times as well or when I know that I will not be able to finish my food i'll just give the leftover piece(s) to the dogs, but other than that, I don't really agree with the idea of having to basically share your own meals with them. If they start begging, I just ignore them for the most part and make no eye contact or say "no" especially if they try to grab your food off the plate. My dogs have a tendency to steal your food if it's down near their level, unattended. I really wish other people wouldn't praise them for begging, I tell them all the time. *facepalm*

I just did this with an apple. I picked it up at work to eat. She thinks it is for her. I tell her no and stick it in my pocket. She sniffs all around me trying to find it. She whines on the elevator ride down to the car. So at the car, I take a bite of the apple and she sits. She thinks to get a treat I have to sit. So I bit off a piece and gave it to her. She tasted it and spit it out. I thought it was because it had the peel on it. So I gave her a piece without peel. Same result. So then I told her no more apple. She thought it was yucky and yet wanted it anyway. Silly girl.

My dogs usually get 100% people food, they rarely eat kibble.
They never beg. In fact they don't eat anything without permission first.

I usually share my apples with Lisl. She doesn't get fed from the table, but if I'm sitting here at the computer or watching TV with her, she likes a pretzel or a Cheeze-it too if I'm having some.
She has to work for it though. LILIF for her except lovies.

At least you have rules and you realize when you break them- rules are meant to be broken a small percentage of the time. I agree with your dogs attitude! I havent fed table food yet, my friend refers to his toy driven pit bull as using jedi mind tricks. He will force you to throw the ball with his stare. Im probably gonna introduce my girl to my uncles 3 little rascals, all under 20 lbs with zero training and always table fed. Im gonna tell him once not to table feed my girl and if he does then **** wonder why he never has her visit again. Shes on a raw diet and doesnt need bad manners for lower grade food than she eats.

I agree with you in the begging, but those eyes. --- anyway I have the same rule, when we sit down at the table my pups walk over a lay in the beds..
But after when we get up I usually give them a treat over the other side of the kitchen near their bowls. They get so excited over it. But if anyone is sitting if front of the tv with food Watch out! Sent from Petguide.com Free App |

If she likes it, put some peanut butter in a kong and let her work at it. I have caved in on occasion and it hasn't ruined the dogs.
