(PIC) How long is TOO LONG of a walk at 19 weeks? Exercising our boy

We took Jaxon out for a REALLY long walk in Santa Monica last weekend during Presidents Day.

We went up and down the boardwalk on concrete, all over the Santa Monica pier which is wooden and very very smooth from the years of people traveling.

All in all we walked a good 5 miles over a 3 hour period with three or so sit down and rests for 15 minutes plus. Some laying in the grass on Ocean Blvd. Got lunch at a restaurant on the 3rd Street Promenade.

He absolutely loved it. He met a good 200 people who came up to him and said HI and petted him and about 20 more dogs throughout the day.

He also was in an immersion socialization program for 4 days before that too where he was playing with 50 dogs a day at doggie day camp. So he could still be tired from that too. He is a trooper.

When we got back the little guy was limping a bit. I checked his feet for splinters or any injuries, but there was nothing. He's all good.

I thought he might just be sore. I did actually step on one of his back feet right at the end of the day as we were heading to the car. Maybe he's just got a sore foot. I thought he may have some bruised pads too from walking all day.

He runs around like a fool right now at full speed, makes me chase him and is having a blast being the happy dog that he is.

If he doesn't stop limping by Friday, I'm gonna take him in to get checked.

Did I work him too hard for 19 weeks old?

No thats not too much for 19 weeks I wouldnt think, I took Diesel out for hours at a time down at the pier when she was 4 - 6 months old she was fine.. He is such a handsome boy and I will also point out that his prong collar is way too big for him

I just follow the rest when they show thy need rest. If he's limping put him on crate rest for a day. No running.

Also, that prong collar is way too big. Should fit snug at the very top of the neck behind his ears :)

Good link to show you how to fit it.

Yah, I only have it in case he chased a bird. He doesn't pull at all, ever. When it closes up it's got about an inch on the band where the metal would meet metal. I want him to grow into it. I cannot believe how good on a lead this dog is. Like he was made to walk on it.

Thanks for you compliment. We kept laughing during the day at how people were swooning over the size of his feet. We would hear out of the back of us or as people walked by "Holy crap, did you see the feet on that dog, He's going to be huge!" LOL. Must have heard that 10 times. I guess he's going to be a big dog. LOL.

Thanks for collar input. I will take a look and find him a cheaper one that is smaller to use until he grows into the big boy one. I have to be honest, it really feels like there is a full grown well behaved dog stuck inside this guy. He never once jumped on anyone at the pier, it was like he'd done it a million times. People would come up to him and he'd sit and look at them like "its ok, you can pet me".

Watch, I'm gonna be the guy that's posting here in 3 months that my dog is now a terror. LOLL.

You need to remove some links. That prong is way too big for now. Fitting it wrong you are more likely to injury the dog than if it is properly snug. Please read and follow that linked article!

EDIT-I see you posted. Don't buy a cheap collar; just remove links from the existing one. A collar with smaller links actually gives a harsher correction.

If you don't need the prong just use a regular collar. A poorly fitted prong could cause injury if he were to lunge after something. You can get a small link one at Petco for like 12 bucks :) & take a look at the link I posted. ;)

He's very handsome by the way! I live in so cal too. I think we're over due for a good Venice trip. Such good socialization.

Sounds like a plan Jocoyn. A little book came with it. I'll figure out how to remove them and size.

Thanks everyone! Very helpful.
