Anyone else have a dog with the attention span of a...Look, a leaf!
Anyone else have a dog who's got the attention span of a goldfish?
My 16 week old pup Navarro has a pretty reliable potty schedule, but he just can't focus when its windy out. He sits by the door and looks at me to tell me he has to go out, and then when we get outside he just stands there and looks around sniffing the wind and forgets he has to go! Usually he goes within 30 seconds of being outside, but even after 5 minutes theres no action. lol Last time it was windy out I took him out 5 times and was late for work. Looks like I'm going to have to put on my rain coat and trudge to the park. |
Puppies are easily distracted, so when you take them outside for a bathroom break, run, and run and run
I live in a state where it gets and has been below 20F degrees/I still have to run, I still have to walk and be outside for over 10 minutes lol. My GSD puppy has a double coat (derives from the Belgian Shepherd bloodline) so he is un-phased :D |
Your title made me laugh. We often joke when the puppy starts barking, oh look its another leaf blowing past. She totally has the attention span of a gnat.

 Yes! I have one of those!

Uh, yes. He's not showing he's ready to move past it yet, either. Luckily he does get the words for bodily functions, but I've seen him get "into position" then "abort" because something caught his eye!

LOL! Yes! Oooo, a blade of grass!

it's not the pup's attention span it's your attention span
concerning how much training and socializing you're willing to do. be slow and consistent. |

Hilarious. Fiona forgets to go potty if a car drives by or a person walks by.

Haha! Oh I'm glad I'm not the only one out there. I planned extra "windy" potty break time, and we got the job done...eventually. lol

Oh man, do I ever have one of those dogs... he's almost three, and focus has been a CONSTANT struggle... even with lots of training, professional help, doggie "jobs" etc....
doggiedad, I suspect your comment comes from someone who does not have a particularly attention span-challenged dog ;) Just like the parents who say to someone with a severe ADHD child, "oh you're just not doing it right." Some dogs have better innate focus than others. You learn to work with what you've got. Echo's almost three, has one of the worst attention spans I've ever seen despite now almost three years of focus work, and we've still managed to get our CGC, etc, and still enjoy nosework and whatnot. He's young still, plenty of time to focus on...focusing :) |
