Hi everyone,
I am doing allot of shopping online before I get my puppy and it's been way too long since we had a fluffy bundle of joy. Any recommendation on toys, chews and treats for our pup and are there any that can be left with the puppy in a crate while we are at work? No sure if bully sticks or any of that stuff would be ok or only if he is watched. Thank you! |

Kongs, Nylabones, antlers...I use this stuff for my puppy. They are left in his crate. Bully sticks might upset his tummy, they did with mine. I only give occasionally.
I use Wellness puppy treats, Blue Buffalo puppy treats etc. Nylabone also makes edible bones for puppies too - mine liked them alot. As for crunchy treats - I give a variety of the Nutro Natural choice treats, they have puppy ones, but also cranberry, banana, peanut butter, apple ones etc. Berlin likes them alot, and they are small enough. Raw knuckle bones are also great - just supervise and dont let him eat the whole thing at once.

A puppy kong is fun and you can stuff it with some of the treats GSDlover91 recommended. If you are going to leave your puppy in his crate while you are at work, well, puppies can't hold it too long. An eight week old puppy needs to have potty breaks every 1-2 hours. If the puppy is left in his crate too long, he'll go the potty in his crate - that is not only unheathly and a lot of clean up, but the puppy will find it is okay to sleep in the mess, and so housetraining will be very very diffcult. I worked with a lady who had a big support team - husband -highschool daughters - parents, inlaws, who each took a time during the work day and would come to let the puppy out. If you don't have this, I suggest you have one room, make it puppy proof, put the crate in the room, leave the crate door open, put down water and food bowls in one area, and puppy piddle pads in another. If you can't use a room for this purpose, maybe you can block off an area with puppy gates, or there are indoor large pens you can buy.

Thank you so much for all the feedback! We have a huge support team as well =) been working out all the details, we wont leave him for more than two hours and if everyone has to leave, we have a dog walker that everyone uses in this neighborhood. Or I am also considering the blocking off a room method. already have metal gates and a large and tall playpan. I was just thinking of the toys and treats in-case he is not sleepy... It has been at-least 15 years for us since we had a puppy... So it's starting all over from scratch with all new products around. Previous shepherd did not chew when he got older so we are clueless of what products are good and safe. Thank you for all the feedback |

My puppy goes through certain hours of the day where he needs to do some serious chewing. To keep him from chewing my furniture, we've been trying loads of different chew toys. His ultra favorite is the 12 inch braided bully. We bought a single one from a local pet store for $12. He chewed through it in a couple days. So, we ordered a 10 pack from Amazon (made in USA) and not only does it keep him busy, but we saved quite a bit ordering online.
We also tried the "Chilly Bone". He was excited the first time, but now doesn't show much interest. Plus, I can see how an agressive chewer could destroy it (has a fabric-like exterior). Finally, we haven't tried carrots because I'm concerned it would cause him to beg for some our ours (we eat carrots frequently). I want to keep his food/treats separate from people food. |

Well Kong ordered, some other silly toys for when I supervise, looking at that ball some people recommended on other posts, but wondering how easy the continents would peal off and if that's dangerous for the pup. I guess now I am just trying to figure out "what size" should everything be.
Thanks everyone, i have a good list going! I also might get extra things and take toys away/ rotate them so puppy is not bored. |
