how to hand treats?
 

My girl has been with me for 3 days and I havent been rewarding behavior with treats? Im slow. Shes on raw chicken legs, I didnt know what to treat her. I got some blue buffalo chicken jerky but thats too long to eat for a treat. Tonight I got american cheese slices. My forefinger is all cut up mostly from me holding a chicken bone for her to strip off and she nipped me, and now I walked her the first time today and she loves eating rocks and I got cut up getting them out of her mouth. Shes only 7 weeks so im also doing some bite inhibition if she bites hard i yelp and avoid her for a short time, but will she shortly realize exactly where my hand is and the food is? Im jerking back a bit or dropping the cheese which I know isnt ideal, I may get a glove?

Do not give with the thumb and forefinger. That's how you get nipped. Give like this (from Michael Ellis DVD Power of training with food):

Use the correct size and type of treat. Not everything is going to be good for training. Try Natural Balance food rolls that you can cut up into cubes, Zukes training treats, Wellness training treats, meat cut up into cubes. Avoid anything shredded, dry, easy to drop or hard to hold.

Thanks, Ill do that way tomorrow. I can see how the dog will snout your hand and then lick that treat out. shes never eaten kibble so Ill use cheese or meat bits for now.

I use the air dried food as training treats since it's less expensive than buying the actual treats. I haven't tried the freeze dried. The pieces are a good size, and my dogs (and cats) LOVE it.
