AKC Registration - Why?

May seem like a silly question so my apologies in advance: If we don't plan to show our dog then is there another reason we would need to do the AKC registration? The breeder gave us the info for registration, told us to log on to the site and pay the fee. For a family pet, is there a benefit or requirement to do the AKC registration?

There is no requirement. The only benefit is, you can trace your puppies pedigree and purchase a copy of it, if you so choose.

If you have no plans on doing any sports/showing, then it's no big deal if you don't register your puppy. Totally up to you:)

By registering your dog you also enable AKC to keep up with the statistics of the GSD. It could also be a valuable tool should your dog ever come into a custody dispute and you have to prove ownership.

Lilie, good point about 'ownership'.. The statistic thing, well akc has a zillion gsd's reg'd every year, one that isn't won't matter much:))

yes, it is a record of the dog's ownership - just like you do with your car....you can get the dog microchipped with their microchip too, and the registration proves ownership....
