Shedding

We have a almost 4mo old GSD. I know these dogs are known to be big shedders. So far so good here but was just wondering about what age they start the shedding?

Thanks

Depending on your environment is usually a factor. Mine started at 8 months old, but he really don't shed too much. Make sure its on really good kibble, it helps alot. I have groomed mine since he was 8 weeks old. Its amazing the puppy fuzz that comes out :)

my dog sheds all of the time. between April and August
it's heavy. i brush my dog 3 to 4 times a week. i brush
him in all directions. it helps with the shedding and it's good
for his coat.

I'm one of the lucky ones. Not lots of shedding going on here and she is 16 months old. I didn't have lots of shedding when she was little either. To be honest she has a nice coat, eats good food and hasn't had a bath in about 8 months or so. My other two have gone to the groomers a few times in that 8 month period. I don't even have to brush her, I do every now and then so that she understands that I can do this.

Shedding begins when they start losing puppy coat and getting adult coat--around 4-5 months--and it never, ever stops. :) In general, the older the dog gets, the more they shed. It can be seasonal, with the heaviest shedding in the spring, but for many dogs (especially if kept indoors) they shed fairly constantly year-round.

Brushing the coat regularly will help keep shedding hair to a minimum. If you really want to get rid of dead coat, invest in a force dryer--a powerful hair dryer made for dogs--they start around $130. After a bath (or even without a bath) you put the drying nozzle right to the dog's skin and watch the dead hair come blasting out. :)

"and it never, ever stops". as the funny man Bernie Mac
said "ever is a lot longer than never".
