Hello,
I have a few questions: We will be receiving our GSD pup early about 6 weeks in age. Is this too soon? I see the the recommended is 8 weeks, but circumstances made that inevitable. Any advice on where to begin with a 6 week old male pup? Tips/tricks welcome :-) thank you in advance!

There's thread on here somewhere that shows which states it is illegal to give the puppy up before 8 weeks. I'll see if I can find it. Plus the first 8 weeks is said to be critical to socialization and other stuff that the experts can chime in on.
But in some states they have very strict laws on it including seizing a dog if it is sold before 8weeks I believe. |

I got my boy at 6 weeks. I had no other option as well. He's done great only thing he didn't really learn was how to control his bite. But he took to me and is very good. Sometime u just don't have the option. Just show your pup lots of love and all will be fine. As far as tricks at that age we just did basic with rewards. Set he learned right away. Good luck!

There has not really been a causation proved to problems leading from getting a puppy at 6 weeks. Most times a breeder that will give pups up at 6 weeks isn't the best breeder anyways (depending on circumstances) but the majority of breeders that do give puppies away at 6 weeks aren't really breeding the best dogs out there.
I got my boy at 6 weeks. Taught him bite inhibition really quickly and we had a shorter "landshark" phase than most people that I've read about on this forum. It will be a little tougher to potty train as they can't hold it as long, but if you have someone home all the time it shouldn't be an issue....just take him out after naps, food, big drinks of water, ect. Raise him like any other puppy, just that you'll have to do things a little more often.

6 weeks is too early for the dog to be assessed for anything so that is a red flag - an indication that the "breeder" just wants them out and gone asap . Not in the pups best interest , nor for the person .
And what about vaccines ? Too early . |

When I brought a past pup home at 6 weeks she became VERY submissive to all other dogs. Which was fine for her breed and my intentions, but may not jive with your desires for a shepherd.
Otherwise she was my best dog yet, so o long term damage done. |

I agree breeder not that great giving away at 6 weeks but someone else will end up with it anyways so I don't feel bad. Lol. One thing about boomer he is not submissive he thinks he's the biggest baddest dog that ever walked until they bark then he sets by me. But not having a reputable breeder and getting at 6 weeks I wouldn't expect to pay normal prices either.
