I realize that there are a variety of different lengths and types of coat in the GSD, but what are the actual differences?
I know my pup is going to be longer haired than a typical GSD, but what coat type would she be actually considered? 8 Weeks Old: **** Deleted by ADMIN due to size - Max picture size allowed 800 X 600 ***** Last edited by Castlemaid; 11-27-2012 at 01:06 AM. She looks like a long stock coat - the floofy hair in and around the ears is the telltale clue.

Thanks for the replies, although, they lead me to another question.
What are the differences between Long Stock, Plush, and Long Coat, I realize that Long Coat lacks an under coat, but are there any significant differences appearance wise? Would anybody be able to post a picture comparison? |

Coat types are stock (the regular short double coat), long stock (long outer hair, with an undercoat), and true longcoat (no undercoat). Most people with coaties, including me, have long stock coats. True LCs are not that common.
Plush is a descriptive term, not an actual coat type. Some people refer to a thicker, fuller stock coat (vs a shorter, tighter coat) as a plush coat, other people refer to their LCs as having a plush coat, which is why it can be confusing. The fur of both stock coats and longcoats can vary in length from dog to dog. |
