I brought home a working line GSD last saturday. Born 9/17, so he's just turned 8 weeks.
He's pretty good about walking with me, but he'll dart from one side of me, around the back, and up on the other side. Always looking up at me every few seconds. I've seen adult dogs do this and I assumed it was a taught behavior, but is it actually a bred instinct? Is is part of their herding instinct? Second question has to do with sleep/vs wake time. Gunnar will sleep nearly the whole night from 9pm-6am with breaks to pee every 3-5 hours. And then during the day he sleeps any time the kids or I are not actively engaging him. I'm not complaining that he's a good sleeper (believe me) but is this normal? Thanks for your insight! 5weeks ![]() 6 weeks ![]() 7 weeks ![]() 8 weeks (too big for my son to hold up any more)

LOL, you better beware of that dog! He looks great. Yes, they sleep a lot at his age. Congratulations on your new addition. Nice picture of your boy with him too. They make a good looking pair.

Handsome pup! Another sable dog on the forum
![]() Every pup is a bit different and best thing is to contact the breeder to make sure the sleep pattern is normal. They can immediately give feedback on how the rest of the litter is doing so the comparison can give immediate calm to you (or concern!).

He looks almost identical to my new pup Bo... Congrats... Bo does the same thing... He'll stay close to me no matter whether its behind beside or slightly in front of me.. He also sleeps alot... I have another dog who won't just let him sleep so unless I call down my other dog to leave him alone( playing with him) Bo does not get the chance to sleep lol. But when he does.. He takes full advantage...when I first got him he did sleep alot more.. I assumed it was Bc he is a puppy and also the fact it was a new place... Good luck... I'm a first time GSD owner... So it's been a whole new experience to me
