Default can a blk/tan pup really be blk/red?

I have a pup i thought was blk and tan. I picked him because of his rich color around his eyes and ears. At 13 wks as his coat is changing his legs appear to be getting darker as did his face/ears. I didnt see the parents. Does anyone know if its possible for a blk and reds legs, chest appear tan early on?

i bought my from a breeder who's dogs are blk&red.
when my puppy came home at 9 weeks old he was blk&tan.
i called the breeder and she told don't worry he'll get darker.
his color got darker slowly. by the time he was 2 yrs old
he was really rich in color.

Thanks, i guess i will wait and see...a breeder brought 3 seven week pups to the veterinary hosp. Where i work. said to put them down due to vomit/dia. He didnt want to risk parvo with the litters. Well, i had recently put my 13 yr old gsd down and asked if he minded if i take it. So...i dont know about his dam/sire, but he is now a healthy addition to our family.

ARGH. He didn't even do a parvo test on them? That is horrible.

I think many ppl would be shocked at these so called reputable breeders. We get the inside stories.. basically many (not all) are extremely good at telling ppl what they want to hear and see. Ps. I found homes for the others too. It appeared they were from dif. Litters. They always time them for christmas

I highly doubt that was a "reputable" breeder as you are saying. Reputable breeders don't time litters for christmas, or dump them at the vet office when they are sick. Those are BYB's.

No, im telling you, they have all kinds of tricks. I have worked at a very large animal hospital for over 20 yrs. They are not all what they appear. Not just shepherd breeders..all kinds. Some will show them at relatives homes so you dont see the real facility and volume of litters. some have puppies put down immediately if not show quality, or if they arent nursing right away. I know they advertise about the loving socialized enviornment and ask you to provide vet references and so forth to make you feel privelaged to get such a high quality pup. But the bottom line is money. They get greedy and the dogs are often treated as a business not somethin with feelings. Sorry, but ive seen it so often. even with expensive champions.

I really dont want to get in an arguement, nor do i wish to imply all breeders are puppy mills on smaller scales. I just want to let you know that just because a puppy has a $2800 price tag doesnt necessarily mean it comes from a fine home instead of being raised in a horse stall without socialization. People are often in this for the money and dont care. Just be aware, i have seen alot of things that would leave you stunned.

Not trying to argue, but many people (especially when paying a large amount of money for a puppy) want to see the living facility of the dogs and also the dam and sire. (Or pics of the sire, at least). I know if I was dishing out that kind of money for a pup, I'd ask for references from other owners who bought a pup from the breeder, I'd want to see the living facilities, I'd ask about the health testing, why they paired certain dogs with one another (what traits were they trying to improve?), etc.
