For those of you with a adjustable wall in your crate... how much space did you give your puppy during crate training? And what was the standard length of time your dog was left in there?
Ideally I will leave my up coming puppy in there for 3 hours Max between potty breaks... but it might be 5 hours.... if 5 do you think I should keep it large so she can pee/poo on one side and not have to sit in/near it? Any other thoughts, ideas, or opinions? Thanks! |

How old is the pup? Young pups need to be taken out within a few minutes after feeding to do their business, and as they get older they can "hold it" longer. Search and ye shall find.
Generally, you want to place the partition so the space is large enough for the dog to lay comfortably but NOT so large that there is enough room for him to poop away from where he lays. The idea is that you make the kennel snug enough so he resists the urge to poop in an area he considers to be his den. We found that our dog got so large so quickly we abandoned the partition after just a few weeks, but we got her at age 3 months..

1>>>> my pup was in a crate that could house an
adult Great Dan. i never used a divider. 2>>>> i got my pup when he was 9 weeks old. he was never in his crate longer than 2 hours without a break including over night. 3>>>> why will your 9 week old pup be crated 3 to 5 hours without a break?? 4>>>> i don't think you want your pup going to the bathroom in it's crate. I use a large kennel with a divider. I also put a plastic box in to make the area smaller. I'm still dealing with Braylee peeing and laying in it. Vet says no baths more than 2 times a week but every morning she is soaked and every day after work she is soaked. I cut off water at least 1 hr before bed time, go to bed at 10pm, potty break at 1:30am then up at 5:30am. Both times she was soaked this morning. To work at 7am, home for lunch at 11am, soaked. I know she is young with small blather but I need advise. I should see progress, she is 9 wks old and I've had her since 4.5 wks. Help!!!

No divider will hinder their ability to housebreak. It's not really bad to not have a divider except that it will delay their housebreaking. We kept ours small, he would wake me up to go outside, and could hold it about 4 hours easy at 8 weeks. He was housebroken within 2 weeks. If you allow them to go in their crate they won't grasp the concept of housebreaking as quickly. You can still housebreak it will just take longer.
If you're willing to put up with that for the comfort of your pup then make it big, if not then keep it small and try to get home. |
