My 6 month old pup will be neutered on tuesday. I know the vet is good as he has been volunterring with the neuter scooters for years, so I know he has done thousands of them. I wish he had a laser but he doesnt and neither do any of the other local vets but one, which charges 300 extra for the laser.. My question. any suggestions to make this go smoothly? anything I should have at the house in case it's needed? any meds that are suggested? thanks.

Get one of those soft cone collars. The plastic cone collars SUCK with a capital S. You want one of the softer ones that is more comfortable for your dog to sleep in and won't scrape the paint off your walls. Your vet will ask if you want pre-surgical bloodwork or post-surgical pain medicine. The correct answer to both is yes.

I'm not looking for a thread on when to neuter.. It is being done. I bring my pup to doggy day care and you must neuter at 6 months. His personality suggests neutering now.. And doggy day care has saved me from rehoming this guy as I work from home and he required almost all day looking after..

Um, okay. I wasn't trying to be offensive or start anything.

It is a personal decision, and one you've made, so that's ok!

Nah, it's cool. OP sent me a PM letting me know that reply wasn't directed at me, it was more to head off the inevitable 75-page debate about neutering age.

No one was nasty to me, just very informative and um.. very.. opinionated on the subject. In the long run, I made my own choice due to some of that feedback. I'd be grumpy if someone crossed me once I had made my choice.

My boy was just fine after his surgery. A little groggy right after....but the next day, he was back his normal self.
I didn't use the cone. He didn't mess with his parts. He was a little slow eatting his kibble right after...maybe for 2 days or so, but I fed him some rice and chicken and he ate that. I know my vet recommended not letting him do any hard playing or work until his follow up appt. My vet gave me the meds. I thinks it's usually included with a neuter.???? |
