My boyfriend and I just got a german shepherd puppy this week. He's 8 weeks old and the cutest little thing ever. This is my first german shepherd so if anyone has anything to tell me about these adorable little puppies just let me know.

Congrats on the new puppy!
![]() My best advice is to be prepared for lots of teeth. Check out some threads on managing this because it won't be long before your puppy decides that hands, arms, ankles, and legs are the most awesome toys ever!

Congrats on your puppy. I agree we need pictures. I do hope you did research though about who you got the dog from. Being as this is your first gsd i am unsure if you know about all of the health issues they have if you go to a non reputable breeder. I just wanted to make sure you are aware of hip and elbow displasia along with degenerative melopathy.
I wish you the best of luck with your landshark and he will be healthy for his life. Also. Crate training= happy puppy and happy parents. I highly highly highly recomend it. Any questions just ask. Good luck! |

We did not get him from a breeder. We got him from a friend. But i asked them a bunch of questions about the parents because i heard that german shepherds can have a lot of health problems. For example my boyfriends mom has a german shepherd and hes about 2 years old now and when he was a puppy he got real bad diarrhea and every since then he has to have this powder with his dog food and he can not have any people food what so ever. And i guess that health problem is hereditary, and they didnt tell her about it. But the people we got our dog from said that the parents didnt have any problems, but we'll find out on monday if theres anything wrong with my lil guy. But im not really sure what other health problems there are, so if anyone can let me know that would be awesome. btw pictures are coming soon, its just hard when all he does is run...haha he never sits still so all the pictures are blurry. but dont worry there coming.

Also does anyone have any tips on how to get your puppy to stop bitting everything they see. Bandit(my GSD) has a bunch of toys but for some reason he likes to chew on blankets, PEOPLE, everything. You cant even sit next to him without him trying to bite you. Its just a play bite but i want to get him to stop doing it. And suggestions???

Tire him out before letting him sit down next you or any furniture.
My girl is 5 months now, and my room still has bare floors since she chews up everything.

I dont know much about GSD but i got mine from a very reputable breeder and she said that when they start chewing or nipping to stick your index and middle finger down their throat. It sounded kind of mean to me at first but i guess since she will be getting HUGE i have to find a way to keep the bitting/nipping at bay early!

Well did that work for you? like have you tried it? it does sound pretty mean but i will do anything for him to stop bitting. Yer right, they will be getting huge and i dont want him bitting/nipping when he has all his adult teeth. If it has worked for you lemme know and i will prob try that.
And we have tried to get him wore out before letting him on the bed with us but he still likes to bite, he'll be all nice at first and lick you but then outta no where he'll start nipping. anyways thank you everyone for the advice. i'm always still open to more advice that will help. |
