Default Calming my puppy while inside.

Hey guys,

I have a 5 month old pup who just completed puppy training. The only issue I'm having now is that he gets extremely hyper while inside, and jumps on the couch and runs around. He's more of a out doors dog about 95% time and if he's luckly he'll come inside and relax while chewing a pigs ear. Usually long walks and playing helps.

He wasn't crate trained to I do take responsibility for that. Is there any technique for him to calm down so he can relax inside with me?

Why is he outside 95% of the time? He can't learn how to act in the house if he's not in the house.
Being inside should not be a treat or something he gets "if he's lucky".
My advice would be to get a crate, bring the pup inside and teach him some manners. Didn't he hurt his leg recently while outside unsupervised?

He still likes to bite, he'll run around and etc. Yes he did, but he healed up so hes fine. If i can get him to walk around and lay down and chill out that would be great.

Any dog who is outside 95% of the time is going to be wild during the 5% of the time he's allowed in the house. The only way to make your puppy be calm in the house, is to make him a house dog. He will not grow out of being wild in the house if he remains an outside dog 95% of the time. When coming into the house is no big deal. . . . it will be no big deal.

How about inside 95% of the time, 10 weeks old, and still completely nuts?

He will never learn how to behave appropriately inside, if he is not allowed inside. Try keeping him in more and use a kennel.

I'm going with everyone else. He gets to come inside "if he's lucky" ? So, 5% of the time he gets "lucky" and is allowed in? And you think with so little indoor exposure, he's supposed to just know via doggy osmosis, how to behave? You're sure asking a lot of the little guy!

I don't quite understand. You take responsibility for the lack of crate training,,, but maybe the responsibility is more about the 95% he's outside? Of that 95%, how often are you interracting with him?

I'm not against outside dogs, but I am against outside puppies.

The older he gets, the harder it will be. At five months, he can wreck stuff -- but if you bring a wild 12 month old in, just think what he could do.

If you want your dog to learn indoor manners, bring him in far more often than 5%. Tether him to you if he's too wild.

Good luck.

I forgot to mention that he sleeps in the garage. He has a bed and everything. Its not that I dont want him to come inside, everybody can tolerate him inside to a certain extent. It just seems like when hes in the garage that's his ' place' and he's nice and relaxed, I want him to be the same way inside. I also have a cat around so that makes it more complicated.

My puppy is very wild too. We also have cats (3). Rocco is an inside dog. He's on his leash at all times while awake. If he is awake, I will go about my business with him tied to me. If we are sitting, watching TV, he is tied to the leg of the coffee table sitting with us on the floor (or unleashed on top of us). We have been giving him free reign when he is calm (usually after exercising or just waking up and still sleeping), but we gate the hallway to restrict his area (and to give the cats a place to feel safe). As soon as he gets too excited, he goes back on leash. He's been very good and he doesn't usually go "crazy" inside the house. Being inside is the norm for him. Going outside is the treat. It's a lot of work, like have a child, but that is what he is to me.

If you don't teach him to interact with the cat now you're going to have issues as he gets older.
Why not keep him leashed and let him be a part of the family?
