Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the site and new to owning a german shepherd. On Dec. 17th I adopted a 3 month old german shepherd mix from the Humane Society. I really have no clue as to what he is mixed with, but the GSD genes are definitely shining through! He is one smart cookie, I tell ya! I am disabled and would like to train Bayne to be my service dog...nothing too complicated...opening doors, picking up dropped items, bringing me a phone if I fall and am unable to get up, or letting a family member know I need them in that case. I have applied to a service dog agency to try to get help training him, but if I am not approved I'll have to do as much as I can on my own. I don't have a lot of experience training dogs, but did go through puppy and beginner classes with my doxie so I at least know the basics. Don't worry....if it turns out that he wouldn't make a good service dog or for some reason we don't get that far he's still my puppy and will be a part of our family forever! Being a new owner to the breed, I am reading anything and everything I can find and am sure I will be spending hours on this site now that I have found it! I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions specific to GSD's, whatever you think will help me best with my new love! Thanks in advance and I am now off to amazon.com to order "German Shepherds for Dummies"! Well, after I see if I can get this pic to post here...gotta show off my new baby! |
