I have a year old GSD, male. He's a good dog. Very loving, loyal, friendly. He's very well behaved. He has stolen food from the counter a few times. We've just tried to keep food off of it so he has nothing to steal. I left something there the other night, he stole it, I got frustrated. I caught him, took him into the kitchen, picked his front up so he was standing on the counter like he must have been when he stole it, put his nose on the food that was left and swatted his butt twice as I yelled No Bad Dog at him. He didn't whimper or yelp. He got out of dodge as quickly as possible. I knew immediately I corrected him unfairly and incorrectly. Now the damage is done. My dog who used to come into my room to sleep every single night, chooses to sleep elsewhere. My dog who used to lay at my feet while watching tv, chooses to lay elsewhere. Who used to willingly and often rush to me for pettings and wag his tail, has to be coaxed and is just tolerating my petting. This occurred two weeks ago. I've obviously learned my lesson, I won't take my frustration out on him ever again, how do I get my dog back? This is awful.

play with him, take him on walks, to a forest preserve, give him treats and praise, just be a good owner and the bond will come back.

Well at least you came here for answers. Swatting your dog will only get you an adverse effect. So please don't do that again. He needs to learn to trust you again. Bonding time is needed. Here are some helpful reads. I'm sure others will have suggestions for you as well.Foods that are Toxic: Foods that are TOXIC to Dogs Pack Structure: Leerburg Dog Training - Q&A Pack Structure Effective Ways of Correction: Leerburg | The Theory of Corrections in Dog Training

This^. We've all made mistakes and the important thing is that you've realized it. Walks, training, and lots of praise will eventually allow your dog to trust you again. Just continue to do right by your dog.
