Default My puppy's wierd behavior

What do you think of this? My puppy turned 5 months old November 25th. I got her in August. I immediately started her in puppy classes. Right from the start she was friendly with everyone, the people, the other dogs. She wanted to play with them. She never showed the tiniest bit of aggression even to aggressive dogs. The instructor has always encouraged us to bring treats to reward our dogs. I got the bright idea last time to take leftover Thanksgiving turkey as a treat for Jasira and the other dogs, always being careful to give her a treat if I gave one to another dog. She was fine until the last exercise called the meet and greet. We get in a circle and one at a time we take our dogs around to carefully greet each other. We had our turn and most the other dogs had gone also. We were down to the last 4 dogs and she lunged at the first of the 4 in a very aggressive manner. I was so shocked I did nothing but when she did it with the next 2 ( one of which is her pal from the dog park ) I yanked her down and told her, " NO. Bad dog." The forth one she just glared at. This from a dog who was nothing but friendly before. Was it the turkey? ( Jas IS a turkey junkie. )

I'm not much help at all here, but I'm wondering why you'd be "treating" the other dogs in the class?

Turkey could most certainly be seen as a way high value treat.

How has she reacted since? I would keep encouraging her when she is greating others good so that she doesn't get the idea that this is an ok behavior. How did you instructor react to this?

It's possible that she was resource guarding you from the other dogs, as the holder and dispenser of turkey. Or it could just be coincidence that this behavior started suddenly on a night that you had a super high value treat.

The instructor was as shocked as I was. She had taken Jas to her farm to play with her dogs and they all had a blast once when I was sick. Her thoughts was that it was resource guarding and don't bring any more turkey. hehe My next class is this Saturday so I'll see how she acts then. She's not around other dogs much during the week.

Well, Saturday Jasira went to her puppy class again. ( I DIDN'T take any turkey this time. :P ) She was fine. No aggression at all. Greeted her dog park friend as her best bud. She looked a little funny at one of the dogs but that was it. I have to face reality. /sigh My little girl is a turkey junkie. hehehe

Yes it could be because you haven't given him a turkey before, right...

We have a client dog who is absolutely fine with all people and dogs. But watch out if you have one of those floppy frisbees, she turns into a completely different dog and she is NOT kidding around. We just eliminated those from the situation and all has been well for years now. We did do training with her regarding her excessive reaction around the frisbee and at least now you can tell her to "out" and she will not immediately launch into tasmanian devil mode, but we don't push it and force her to be around other dogs and that toy.
Guess your pup has decided turkey is the bomb .
