We got our pup late september. she was infested with worms. we took her to the vet, dewormed her and got her on interceptor. She has been taking interceptor with no symptoms or problems every month since and NOW she poops out 3 wriggling roundworms yesterday. wtf? Why are worms still coming out? How do I get rid of these things!!!!

Do you leave her outside unsupervised? She could be eating other animals poop!
Wendy came from a farm with geese, ducks, chicken, dear, fox, raccoons, etc etc. She had Roundworms, hookworms and pin-worms. We have her cleared up - but the vet said it was because she was probably left outside unsupervised where any number of these animals have left scat and she either ate the scat or grass that was near the scat. Now we keep a close eye on her - because she does try to chew leaves and to puck up goose poop. And she is still taking worming meds in order to ensure they don't come back.

Puppies can easily reinfect themselves over and over again, they can get roundworm from the ground if they have pooped on it and then get it on their paws and lick their paws, etc.
The wormers "anesthetize" the adult roundworms, forcing them to let go of the intestine and come out the body, they are usually not dead yet, but will die very quickly outside the body. BUT, the larve are not killed by the wormer, so until the cycles complete themselves and they turn into adults and die and so on, a puppy needs to be wormed two or three or more times. Since she is on a monthly wormer, she is picking up the roundworm eggs from her own yard or ground where she is walked or eating mice or poop that have larve in them. |

Not sure where you live, sometimes a good cold frost will kill the larve.
Just try to keep her from eating little critters, and pick up her poop so she doesn't have a chance to step in it. The cycles will end, and it helps as she matures, because roundworms don't usually bother adult dogs. |

It takes more than one deworming to get all the worms.
You need to do 2-3 rounds of deworming, 10-14 days apart. Roundworms don't just live in the stomach, they go in the lungs and liver and even muscle tissue. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...__puppies.html Last edited by msvette2u; 12-06-2011 at 12:06 PM. |
