hello Good Folks,
I got my puppy like 2 weeks ago. He is quite settled in, but I am a bit vexed with his coat. He is getting close to being 3 months of age. His breeder recommended the Kirkland Signature super premium puppy dry dog food. Costco.com: KS_PetFood_Puppy I looked it up on Dog food adviser, it said it was 4/5 stars, and so I got a costco membership and purchased it. His coat is not exactly healthy. It is dry and has flakes. Admittedly I havent brushed him at all. I got 3 Oster Brushes, one is a slicker brush, another with nylon bristles (like you would use to clean the bath tub) and the 3rd is like a human hair brush with rounded tips. Well, my pup hates the slicker brush. Its hard core yelping and gnawing with it. A friend recommended the "Furminator". And then there are about a billion choices for it. On this forum, some people love it, some hate it. My dog's fur is matted especially at the rear (near the butt area). What should I do?

maybe your pup needs a bath. why didn't you brush
your pup? i brush my dog 3 to 4 times a week. i use an undercoat comb and a pin brush. somedays he gets a full brushing (brushing him in all directions) and somedays he gets brushed (brushed in one direction) i always smooth him out with the pin brush. your dog isn't use to being brushed because of that and he's matted could be the cause of his resistance. when my dog was a pup i brushed him a few times daily. i brushed him often because i wanted him to get use to being brushed. when my dog was a pup i used a bristle brush. he didn't need an undercoat comb or pin brush. there's several groomers on the forum. one of them can tell you how to handle the mats. make sure your dog doesn't have fleas because that can cause dryness and flakes. has your dog been to the Vet since you had him??? the Furminator wasn't a good tool for my dog. My puppy is still a terror when I try to comb him. He is 4.5 months but it is a lot better than it was at 12 weeks. It takes time, patience, some treats, some assertiveness.
I think the omega 3s are kind of low in that food as it is in just about any dog food (AAFCO does not consider essential but they work wonders-even if they are good in the food, I think they break down with cooking and storage so most folks supplement regardless-that is a decent food.). There are a whole lot of different opinions on the best oils to give but definitely an omega 3 supplement is in order. Right now my 40lb puppy is getting one regular strength fish oil in the am and one in the pm. I am looking at other alternatives.

I think I found the solution. I talked to his breeder and right now I am adding extra virgin olive oil in his food and feeding him a table spoon of flax seed oil every day.
Also, I have thrown away the stupid slicker brush. It hurts my pup, he doesnt like it. When I tried it on my arm, it hurt me. I am using a nylon bristle brush and brush with human hair style pins with pin heads. Also, I am giving him a EVOO massage every once a week. He looks gorgeous! |
