Hey everyone! I'm new here and trust me this won't be my last post
![]() Our newest addition is going to be arriving end of Dec or beginning of Jan I'm excited to say the least! He will be roughly 8 weeks old and I am a bundle of nerves! I'm trying to make sure I have everything ready for him. - crate - food/water bowls - leash/collar - kongs/toys Anything major I'm forgetting? Ive already got a 'puppy kindergarten' planne for when he comes too. How soon should I start training him....like the sit, stay, off etc? Is potty training and training too much for a youngster? ![]() Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

You can start potty training when they get home... but know that with a pup that young you're going to have to be taking them out ALLLL the time. Probably about every 15-30 minutes and slowly increasing the time in between potty breaks.
I dont think theyre too young to start with an off or any kind of training...just keep it fun! Make you there are plenty of treats and praise for good behavior! You also forgot one thing.....a lot of patience! Congrats on the new addition and good luck! |

Hello and Welcome! When your puppy first comes home I would just try bonding with him for the first week because he is going to be missing his momma and his or her littermates. Everything is going to be strange and scary to it, so that is where your bonding with it will be important.
You can start potty training as soon as you bring it home, take it outside if you can every 20 min or so or if it has just awakened from a nap, or right after eating. Take it to the area outside that you want it to go to when you want it to potty and praise it when it goes. I would not try to start training with commands untill it is a little older, it's first few weeks it just needs to get used to it's new home.

Thanks for the replies!
I feel terrible about crate training....I really don't mind if he sleeps in bed with us, but I've read it causes problems with setting authority I wonder if anyone has a obident GSD who doesn't crate....hmmm....I will definitely post pictures of him when he arrives! I have some puppy pics of him that the breeder has sent us but that's all He's arriving 2 weeks after the hubby comes home from deployment...yay!

If you plan on leaving the house to go to work and make a living to bring home the bacon for doggy and you, then crating is a really good idea . For the dogs emotional health he has to bond to you , but he also needs to be secure and familiar with being separate .
Is the breeder sending you pictures of "your pup" now? Because you said " Our newest addition is going to be arriving end of Dec or beginning of Jan I'm excited to say the least! He will be roughly 8 weeks old" . That means in order to be 8 weeks old in that time frame the pup was just born. I question how an appropriate match can be made for you so early. The crate can be overused as it is convenient but all dogs should learn how to be comfortable in one for long trips away from home, stays at the vet etc. It becomes an ok place for them. My dogs often just go into their crates with the doors open.

Well I contacted the breeder and chose from the father and mother I liked best. He was born November 4th. I guess my question is to you, why does it need to be a 'perfect match' so early on? Are you questioning my ability or is there something I'm missing? :/ |
