I got riled by a post on a GSD Facebook group yesterday that really shocked me. It was a post by a guy who said he bred his mixed male to a GSD and now had "gorgeous" puppies. He didn't even know what kind of a mix his male was and only DNA'ed him after (GSD/Great Pyrenees mix.) He was complaining because so many people had been "mean" to him for breeding mixed dogs.
I commented on his post, explaining that people were simply concerned about his intent. I asked about health tests, temperment proofing and so on. All the things responsible GSD breeders do to pass on the most desireable traits to their pups.
My comment was deleted, and I was told I was being "mean."
Meanwhile, there were hundreds of supportive comments on the post saying purebred "snobbery" is bad and there's nothing wrong with breeding mixed dogs. This, all in a GSD group!
Rather than continuing on a rant about it, I want to thank all the responsible breeders on here for what you do!
Thank you for your commitment to doing things right. For the countless hours you spend with your dogs training, titling and whelping. Thank you for the incredible amount of money you spend on your dogs to produce the best, to keep your dogs healthy and to care for the pups. Thank you for loving your pups enough to make sure they go to good homes with people who are educated and love the breed like you do.
You are up against a great amount of ignorance out there. Thank you for not cutting corners to make a buck.
Thank you for your dedication to this lovely breed.
I just want to second this, as someone who's new to the breed and has been learning from all of you for a couple months now. I cannot even put into words how much I appreciate the wealth of knowledge and help here! I know I still have a lot to learn, but I feel like I've already gained so much just from the threads I've read.
I can't handle most of the GSD groups. Most are basically an echo chamber for furmommies and BYBs. Their primary use is entertainment among my friends.
Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Although, I've met a few solid people in one of the groups and we try to hang together and give reasonable advice, but we usually just end up getting beaten down by the echochamber. I feel bad for the dogs owned by some of these people.
It's sad how dense people are sometimes, I try to stay away from all the GSD Facebook groups unless they are training related. It's not so bad that people just don't know, that's fine, but they don't want to know what is right. No desire to get educated.
I also am very grateful for all the experienced GSD breeders (and owners too). This forum has helped so much with both GSDs I've had, really some nice, caring people on here for the most part. I really hope this forum can continue to stay as serious as it is about educating people about the GSD standard.
Me too, but unfortunately the number of experienced people have left as well due to some of that nonsense. Newer people arguing with the experienced about things they really don't know yet. After a while it gets old and they leave. The number of in depth conversations that used to take place on here have dropped dramatically.
Not to steal your post but i just encountered something similar on a facebook group. Owner from what's seems to be a 3rd world country proudly showing off their obviously very sick dog. Admin threatened to ban anyone who says anything negative. I made a separate post about it. I'm sure I'll be banned soon. I'm sorry we all have genuine concerns but can't be "mean"...........
I have noticed this GSD group will let anyone in hey look at my gsd mix. Dude that's a Chihuahua lol. Do they not understand how we love the breed and real breeders spend every moment keeping the breed the way it is supposed to be.
I also agree...three cheers to the responsible breeders. Sad that the administrators of the group would not want to see the breed itself preserved to its standard. The true breeders spend years discerning lines for temp, work ethic, hips, elbows, backs etc. Many GSDs in shelters, bite cases etc are also from bad "mixes" and then the ins companies penalize or ban certain breeds to include GSD. Very sad. So, yes, a huge shout out to the dedicated breeders...and also to good admin./moderators who can appreciate the respectful, but very necessary, comments to the contrary.
I don't mind mixing breeds IF they do it with clear intentions. After all, that is how we got some of our breeds, a little bit of this and some of that. Breeding should be more than, "hey, I have a nice dog and you have a nice dog. Let's make puppies". It should be with the goal of having healthy sound pups that serve a purpose, even for a pet home.
That being said, I have had my share of wonderful mixed breeds for most likely oops litters. There shouldn't be oops litters, but they do happen.
Agreed. If it's two breeds that compliment one another and there's intent behind it, okay. And I get oops litters. They happen.
This was neither of those scenarios. This was, "Hey I have a swell dog and I want puppies."
And then when some of us said maybe that wasn't the best decision, we got blasted. Sigh...
