Default Yard Cover

I've relocated to Canada for a year, the yard is very small and the trees block out sunlight such that the grass is almost nonexistent. I expect that this winter, the backyard will be muddy. I was thinking about putting down gravel or some sort of geofabric. Anyone else run into this sort of thing and have any advise? Thanks.

I have that trouble by the back gate. I put down some cedar mulch and that helped. What really worked better were pine needles. I raked some over the spot and it did keep the the area covered.

Thanks, Mary Beth. I was thinking about mulch too, but I think my dog will eat it. Maybe some sort of outdoor carpet.

PS - good looking GSD you got there!

I've used pea gravel with great success, and another member suggested river rock in a similar thread.

I've never tried it, but I've been hearing people using clover as a ground cover.
