When I was growing up, I didn't even like dogs. As an adult, I learned to appreciate them, and my first dog was a mutt from the pound. I got lucky with him, he had a stellar temperament, and even qualified as a therapy dog. I taught him some basic tricks (one of them was to play the piano), and used his repertoire of tricks to entertain nursing home residents.
My second dog was also a pound puppy - but she was a completely different experience from my prev one! I had to reluctantly admit to I did not know how to handle her, and enrolled in Obedience classes. I used to think that Obedience classes would be boring, but I was so wrong! It was fun!!! I learnt so much, and as we worked together, our relationship completely turned around as we became a team. My instructor (who also did Schutzhund) invited me to continue on as an assistant in his classes, and talked me into trying out Schutzhund.
I never heard of Schutzhund, but I went to watch, and I was blown away! I decide this was something I wanted to be part of. Being involved in Schutzhund had me involved in GSDs. I used to think that a dog was a dog was a dog, but THESE dogs were something special!
I joined this board to learn more about Schutzhund and GSDs, and brag about Keeta's progress and share our success, and soaked up avidly all the posts and discussions on training, history, breeding, and so on.
A few years ago, I was your average pet owner - believed all the old wive's tales about feeding raw meat (it will make your dog mean), neutering dogs (must neuter or the dog will be dominant), how their temperament was all determined by how the dog was raised, never gave responsible vs. irresponsible breeding a thought, and so on. Back then, had I been looking for a pure-bred dog, I would have picked up a newspaper or bought from a pet shop, not knowing any better, so I try to be kind and patient with newbies, remembering how it was with me too back then, when I was clueless but thought that I knew everything. ;0)
(Oh . . . Wait!! that hasn't changed . . . )
