Default Tell me the saddest/happiest story

Tell me the saddest story you know; preferably doggie or pet related...

Sabis mom's story about Bud in 'the will to live' thread is one of the saddest I've read...

Also, tell me the saddest experience YOU have been through with regard to your pets....

Then tell me the happiest story you know...again, preferably doggie or pet related.

For me, this one is to be continued...

Finally, tell me the happiest experience you have had with your pets. Preferably a specific and detailed story (or accomplishment) and not something too general (like they make me happy).

saddest, saying good bye to my dogs. happiest, too many to list, but the happiness starts on the day i bring them home.

not much to detail, but seeing my 2 gsd "adopt" my daughters on the day they "daughters" first came home., rarely leaving their side. seeing the girls grow up with the gsd. hearing the girls laughter while playing with the gsd, dress up or chasing them around the yard. curled up on the gsd for a nap and other things i can't think of at the moment. sad part ws telling them about doggie heaven.
happiest exp, seeing how my daughters grow and care for our last gsd and including her in many of their activities. knowing my daughters have a love for gsd and a respect for all animals.

nice thread ziva, good to see you posting!

The saddest story I know of would be anytime I hear about a shelter dog being put to sleep with that sad look of defeat on their faces...it gets me to me. Even more so when the dog has had a horrible life and never knew kindness.

This would be when I had to put our 9 yr old foster failure to sleep a month and a half after adopting her. She stopped eating one day so I took her in thinking I was going to need to change her meds, only for the doctor to tell me she had Hemangiosarcoma and there was nothing to do but let her go. I balled my eyes out.

I always enjoy hearing the reunion stories of MWD's and their handlers...such a special bond that happens...those videos always bring tears of joy.

Another one is the story of Rogue, the German Shepherd who was saved by a man at the last minute. He was told he's unadoptable. This dog is the most loving, sweetest goob. He's overcome health issues and has brought people from all over the world together.

This would have to be the joy I see in the faces of my two rescues. One I still have and the other was our senior who passed away. Each day, Red my male is so grateful. I love all my dogs, but there is something special with him...he is my heart dog : )When I first got him, he was scared, untrusting, unhealthy, and miserable. In the two years I've had him, he's found a new zest for life. He is my reason for falling in love with the German Shepherd breed. Also my reason for fostering others.

I love this thread...thanks for starting it up!

Tell me the saddest story you know; preferably doggie or pet related...

Two summers ago, I was on vacation (my family spends 2 weeks on a lake - we panfish, kayak, and it's pretty rustic - every summer) when I learned that there at been a fire at one of my dogs' breeders' property and many dogs were killed. Her favorite dog was one of them. The training building, dog kennel, and her husband's private x-ray clinic completely burned to the ground. I can't even remember how I found out (must've been an email or text), but I felt so awful. I told my family what happened and they were shocked even though they aren't dog people.

Then tell me the happiest story you know...again, preferably doggie or pet related.

So many but the first that comes to mind is again two summers ago (same week the above happened) I met a woman who was in the process of writing a book about her experiences spending months walking through woods and fields, visiting little towns on foot looking for her dog that ran away when spooked by a firework. She did get her dog back. I hope she finishes the book!

Finally, tell me the happiest experience you have had with your pets. Preferably a specific and detailed story (or accomplishment) and not something too general (like they make me happy).

Nikon's breed survey was a big deal to me. Doing the survey itself is not difficult, but everything that leads up to it. Your dog must do a BH, AD, a working title, a show rating, have hip and elbow certifications. I wanted to showcase my dog so we did the performance test like it was a Schutzhund trial - completely off leash (not grabbing the dog's collar after an out and not using a leash to setup the long bite). I thought his critique was very fair and accurate. Of course I'm thrilled with everything he as accomplished in spite of my inexperience at the beginning (he is the first dog I've raised from puppyhood and has experienced many firsts with me like training for Schutzhund, agility, flyball, etc). I am thrilled with how he has matured and honestly find myself dreaming about owning other breeds, I don't think I will ever find another GSD like him. Another specific experience would be when I had Nikon's son, Legend, at the vet for a puppy shot/checkup and the vet was so impressed with him, he kept stalling so he could keep petting him and complimenting his temperament.

Saddest

The Sunday I took my 8.5 year old GSD to Dog Park, the day before he was running around and playing the Saturday before, Sunday we walked in and he just laid down. I knew something was wrong and took him to my Vet where I was told he was bleeding internally. I would not accept that and took him to my specialist where it was confirmed. They told me he could not go home with me that he wouldn't make it through the night and I had to euthanize him then and there, what started out as a fun day at dog park ended in having to put him to sleep.

Happiest

The next day taking the day off I found a pup that shared the same grandfather an my dog I just put down. I bought him that day, he's 10 months old now

I'm with huntergreen.

saddest day is when I have to let them go

Happiest days are when I bring in a new puppy and all the days leading up to the saddest.
