Coat change question for those with adult GSDs

Jericho is now 13 months and his coat has been slowly changing for a couple of months now. I'm wondering at what age your GSD's got their adult coat coloring? I think Jericho is going to have the typical GSD saddle markings, but I can't really tell. He's still mostly black.

After 18 months, the changes are minor. Hans is over 2 years old now, and I am still seeing little changes. I suspect they will happen until he is around 3.

I second Sunflower's response.....as this has been my experience mostly.

Harry and Lola 04-24-2014 09:04 PM

Thinking back, I noticed Lola really came into her coat at about 3 years old - in terms of thickness, she has a beautiful coat now. Harry is 3 years old, and imo still has not come into his coat, I suspect this has something to do having EPI.

Colour changes constantly, from puppy to adult and from adult to senior.

I've noticed lately that the fur in his hind legs seems to be growing out and is changing quicker than the rest of his body. LOL, we just finally grew into those huge ears and tail...now this...makes you wonder if he is always going to look as goofy as he acts. Thanks for all of your responses. I'm so curious to know what he is going to end up looking like. Life's big mysteries....right?!

Our rescue was guesstimated to be about 5 years of age and his coat seemed to have changed a bit with the better nutrition and better living environment compared to his life as a puppy mill stud. Not familiar with how much their coats change in adult ages but it's interesting to observe.

Myah's Mom 04-29-2014 12:36 AM

For traditional black and tans, yes, they continue to lighten up to 3 yrs of age.

Myah's mom and grandmom all share the same coloring: nearly all black as young pups, with the saddle appearing near age 1 and continuing to lighten in the face, chest, shoulders and hips up to age 3. But when they were 6 mo's old = all black face and head, with only a tiny hint of tan peeping through around the ears.

I'm hoping Myah stays a bit dark. She's exotic looking and I love it.
