Default First Heat Cycle ~ Strange Behavior

We acquired a female about a month or so ago. A week ago Thursday hubby noticed a few drops of blood on her and he said she was swollen. Our male's obsession with sniffing her butt constantly also was a HUGE indication. Since last Thursday the bleeding has not really increased there are just a few drops of blood on the floor every so often.

She normally gets locked in the crate between 12 and 2 AM and then she is back out by 9 or 10 AM. Unless we both have to be out of the house for the day she is out of her crate unless we can not watch them every second. There is water available to her at all times. I read online where it said that a female's water intake would increase when she was in heat however she seems to be drinking much less than she used to.

For the past 3 or 4 days she is only peeing once a day. She has always had a bladder of steel but would go several times throughout the say. For the first 3 or 4 days she would pee between 5:00 and 5;30 or so. Today it was after 7:00 before she went. The past few days she has not been herself. Normally she tries to engage the male to play and she has just been kind of laying around. Hubby said that she threw up 3 times on Thursday morning and she would not touch her breakfast.

Is this normal for a female or should we be concerned?

Laying around is not good.

It could be heat, it can also be pyometra -- dangerous. Two types, open and closed. This is where the uterine horns fill with pus. It will kill the bitch if it is closed as it will burst. If it is open, then she will be leaking. Blood sounds like it is a heat cycle, but she may be sick as well.

If you feel she is lethargic, moreso than can be explained by being in a new home, etc., check her vitals: temperature, refill, dehydration and call your vet for a full check up.

How do you check a dog for dehydration? What is refill? Pretty sure it is not living here, she adjusted quickly and these changes are just over the past few days.

You can check for dehydration by pinching the skin at the nape if her neck and counting how long it takes to go back to normal. It should take less than a second.

Refill, I am assuming means capillary refill time. The easiest way to check this is to lift her lip, press the pad if your finger against her gums. The gums should Blanche and then return to normal color. This should take 1-2 seconds. The gums should also be wet. If they are tacky/sticky it can be a sign of dehydration as well.

Her temperature should be between 100-102. Taken rectally.
