I can only say I use the furminator, a de-shedding blade and the standard brush.

I just use a Furminator a few times a year, and stick to a standard brush.

No, all you need for a GSD is the rake! Every great once in a while I use a pin brush (mainly fluffing a spot before going into the show ring). I've never used a slicker on a GSD, they just seem to make everything really static-y.

Gryffon is pretty plushy - can't get the furminator down into his undercoat. I only use a double-row under-coat rake and a comb on him.

It really depends on the coat. I had two long-coats - I used cornstarch for starts (lets the undercoat come right out), a matt splitter on the fluffiest parts, followed by the undercoat rake everywhere and topped off by the slicker or a general brush. Another great tool was a rubbermaid comb for long coated dogs. Unfortunately, it is no longer made but it pretty much did the job of all the other tools except for the splitter.) You can get a general brush at the dollar store and it will work every bit as good as the more expensive version.

Best tools for those two dogs were the splitter & the comb - followed by the rake. My present 4 yo has a tight coat - undercoat rake is silly in her case and a different comb does a great job.

So it really depends on what you get coat wise as to what tools are going to work.

I agree that whatever grooming tool you use will depend on the coat. But I wouldn't bother buying the freshening spray. Maybe other people think it's a good buy, but I think GSDs smell awesome as is, lol! Plus, with so many ending up with allergies/sensitivities, why add something like this? JMO though.

Lisl is a coatie and I use a slicker brush and undercoat rake.

GatorDog 02-24-2014 12:58 PM

I only use the undercoat rake.

I have that exact undercoat rake, and it's great! I do have a pin brush too, but most of the time I use the rake.
